Welcome to Bravely Default, the amazing square RPG for the 3DS that's more final fantasy than final fantasy whose online features can completely break the game for newer players. Enjoy yourself, and ask yours truly if you have any questions.

I tend towards using Edea as my on field character... I dunno why, probably because mrgrgr. For me my suicidal character is Ringabel. I have an attack (not Phoenix flight) that brings him down to 1 HP which usually results in his death on the next turn. Then a skill activates that deals damage upon his death, usually dealing 9999 damage, and then on the next turn there's a skill with a high chance of auto-reviving him on the next turn. I choose Ringabel to have this set up because he deserves it. Throughout most of the game he was always the fragile character who constantly died even when everyone else lived. I figured I should put his powers to good use.

My field character is Ringabel because holy s*** it's Ringabel and Ringabel BOSS. Edea seems to be the person on my party who can't bloody live. The worst part is that Edea is a knight, and the rest of them are mages. -_- I don't even know. EDIT: it's gotten so bad now that she's THREE levels behind the others, who are less than 50 experience apart and haven't died once. But *and I started counting after the third time* Edea has died six times, almost always at the end of battles. She died at the end of Crowe and Heinkel, so she missed out on almost a level and a half just there. The rest of my party is level 13 and she's 10, and we're headed off to Ancheim. -_- EDIT2: I know you're stalking this thread, Clax. You're the only other person on. >_>

Looks like she caught Ringabel-itus from my game. Somehow. Because Ringabel also missed out on a ton of levels.
She's a good candidate for knight classes, so unless she's dying due to poor magic defence I have no idea what to do. I'd recommend grinding a bit before anchiem and keeping her equipment up to snuff. Though who knows where you are in the game now.

Grabbed the four sidequest jobs along the way. Stop trying to help me. ;;

I could swear that it took me about a billion times because his takeover attack is so strong. But the spellfencer was one of my favourite classes, so it was all good for me.

Takeover was strong, but I just kept everyone healthy and even when he tried to go for the same person twice my knight (Edea) would tank the other hit so I wouldn't die. So it actually went very smoothly. Also I think you have a problem of "wanting to buy everything right when it's avaliable." My equips from Caldislia were doing fine through most of Ancheim and by the time I went for the rainbow thread my party was fully geared and I had about 7,000 pg. The number only increased as I went on. (And I didn't grind at all.) EDIT: Ringabel only proves to be more boss by having awesome special move theme. (Well they're all good, but still. I like Ringabel's.) Oh, and the Spell Fencer is cool. I like the idea of enchanting your weapon to have physical attacks with magic effects.

I could swear that it took me about a billion times because his takeover attack is so strong. But the spellfencer was one of my favourite classes, so it was all good for me. Mentioning of tough battles, I came to an impasse for awhile when trying to beat LeRosa. I know he's optional, but still, his Adrenaline + constant healing and powerful attack that hits all party members was somewhat difficult to get around. Eventually I did, and now heading to chapter 3 my party looks like this: Level 26 Ringabel - Summoner, sub Black Magic Level 26 Edea, Valkyrie, sub Freelancer (Only because I like to see boss HP) Level 26 Tiz - White Mage, sub Time Magic (This group cast skill is OP, Tiz pro at buffing everyone.) Level 26 Agnes - Red Mage, sub Spell Fencer So obviously, Ringabel is the pure-magic user here. Pretty strong and good in general and good at wiping out mobs, though he was more powerful when I had him with Al's Abilink since I had pierce M-def as his skill. Edea is the tank (she finally stopped dying all the time) who shrugs off pretty much any attack and counters hard with the Valkyrie's Jump ability. Tiz is my healer and has been since White Mage was avaliable. Thanks to Al's abilink he can use the black mage ability Epic-Group cast which lets him revive everyone, buff everyone, etc, with only a single action. It's very helpful. Lastly, Agnes is just the all-around do everything character. She heals, she does good damage and has decent armor. That aside, minor story issue here. At the end of the 2nd chapter Edea "reveals" who she is and Agnes gets all huffy about it...even though Edea never specifically mentioned who she was, a soldier IN THE INTRO CHAPTER did. And Agnes was RIGHT THERE. But whatever, just a simple plothole that I can give this game grace for due to how amazing the journey has been so far. Though I certainly hope the adventure doesn't end with the four crystals because if it is, I'm halfway through only 15 hours in, and that would be a bit dissapointing since I really like this game and want more than 30 hours out of it. Al, I don't want any spoilers saying there's more after restoring the crystals, just tell me how long the game lasted for you.

My playtime right now sits at just above 97 hours. I've probably only spent about 5-10 hours on the post game and I technically haven't completed everything yet, but I haven't been trying to recently. Definitely do side quests as soon as they become available, I cannot be certain but there might be some missables. Just stay on the safe side, if you have gaps on the job screen then I recommend looking around more. The job screen lists all jobs in the order at which they become available to become obtained. Some late game jobs have obscure requirements, so don't worry about the last few.
I chalked up Agnes not knowing about Edea's identity to the fact that in a lot of things, characters have asides and conversations that are loud enough for the viewer to hear, and in real life would also be heard by surrounding characters, but word of god states that the other characters can't hear them anyway. I can't quite remember much of Edea's introduction anyway, so I might be completely wrong on this and defending something that doesn't deserve to be defended. I'm sure Agnes being huffy about Edea didn't require a reveal like that.
Oh... and by the way, read D's journal whenever you have the chance, any point in the game is fine really but the sooner you can be bothered to sift through that monstrous amount of text, the better.

D's Journal: I read through every new entry as it comes along Sidequests: I've done them all. Pretty sure I have every avaliable job right now, as there are no gaps. Edea: It's the part where she pretends to take Agnes and the others prisoner to get them inside. Agnes is (obviously) right next to Edea and the soldier, and the soldier CLEARLY calls her the Grand Marshall's daughter. Of course, I suppose Agnes is sheltered and wouldn't know who that is since she's spent her entire life in a temple. Also, you haven't maxed the ranger job. How dare you. That all aside, could you send me an attack that does damage? o .o Probably won't need it, but if I run into another impasse like what happened with DeRosa I'd like to have it. EDIT: Also that Fight with Victoria and Victor irritated me. I wasted like 5 ethers because Tiz was out of MP and I couldn't heal. And then boom. Of course, it did do what it was supposed to do with that kind of fight and scare me against those two, especially when I saw they both had 60 thousand hp, more than DOUBLE of any enemy I had previously faced. Oh, and when Victor OHKO'd Edea with a normal melee attack.

You don't need me to send you an attack- just click 'update data' regularly from the save screen and you'll get lots of other people's much stronger attacks. I might send you another attack as you draw towards the end, so long as you keep me updated on your progress like this (these posts of yours are enjoyable reads for me.) It would be interesting if you had something that powerful for the victor(ia) fight. (Unrelated: Victor's spirit master is one of my favourite classes in the entire game) Ranger was one of my least favourites though, which is why I didn't max it. I only leveled it up for bow lore, because I had Ringabel using an angel bow from Norende which outclassed basically every other weapon at the time. Anyway, no I don't mean the character entries, I mean the long notes left by this 'D' person. It has some illustrations in it, and during the story it's what Ringabel uses to predict the party's next course of action.

You haven't really spoiled anything, all that entry tells you is that the crystal orthodoxy are corrupt, some fleshing out for the world and some fairly important characters. It only really has significant importance during one chapter of the game. But yeah don't look anywhere else on that page, or else YOU WILL FIND MAJOR SPOILERS VERY QUICKLY.

It obviously has a lot of play time and I don't want to burn myself out for months.

You may want to revive another crystal or something before you take that break though, it might be better paced that way. In any case, I shouldn't tell you how to play. I'll only insist that you read the enigmatic writings in the journal.
