The new Tron was full of dissapoint.
Avoid it.
The new Tron was full of dissapoint.
Avoid it.
Exactly how bad was the new Tron movie?
The new Tron movie wasn't terrible by any stretch of the word.
It was really bland though.
It was a straight up action movie, nothing more, nothing less.
And that is the problem.
It has not aged at all.
By that I mean that the movie is still cheesy and shallow.
While that worked for the first Tron (really well I might add) in this one we expect more. It has been... what... 30 years? All that had been updated were the special effects.
This new movie takes place (coincidentally) about 30 years after the first one ended.
And yet...
The technological world hasn't become more advanced over time.
There is no parallel to the deeper issues of some of our technology or our controversial advances.
There is nothing.
I am not saying that it should have been Inception. I am saying that we should have been given more and what we got look like it was just put out for money. Cashing in on a great movie with a big following. Whoring out the franchise like Star Wars did (ok, that comparison was pretty uncalled for and cruel. I apologize).
Although... while there was a distinct lack of technological symbolism... I noticed some rudimentary Christian imagery was used to define the sides.
It does so in a kind of insulting way.
It is like they are bashing the fact that the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad over our head to make sure we get it. Like it is assuming we are thick and eat paste.
See, Flynn was characterized with white light, a beard, a relaxed attitude, patience, forgiving nature, passificism, and he dies to save everyone.
Clu was a program that was made in the image of Flynn (of course Flynn made everything in his own image, Clu just looks like a clone). Clu was one of the first programs Flynn made. Clu was a big program. Clu was made to help create the perfect world.
Clu disliked that he had to work in an imperfect world serving imperfect creatures and went on a tyrade attempting to destroy everything and then pervert it to his side/cause. Clu is characterized by the color flaming orange and a brash, harsh, intolerant, violent attitude.
Hmm... what does this sound like?
One of the things that I liked about the first Tron was that the story was so simple that it could have been anything.
With a few minor changes it could have been a war story.
It could have been about pirates.
It looked like they just decided that it should take place in a computer because that is awesome!
With this new movie it seems like they are just following in it footsteps.
It plays it safe.
It does a lot of things the same.
It feels more like an expansion pack than another game. (<-- how's that analogy?)
It does not add anything to movies as a whole or its own series.
It is entertaining? It can be.
Characters are bland and forgettable.
There are also a number of things that show a lack of imagination on the writers/directors/producers part.
Like how they basically have Flynn become a Jedi Jesus.
Why do they do this?
To write the characters out of a few situations and give the movie a really dumb ending because a normal ending was too bland, even for them.
How did he become a Jedi Jesus?
It is implied that because he made the world he can bend rules like Neo.
When I say implied I mean that it is never explained and that is all I can come up with.
The music was pretty good though.
Except for the 2 sound blurbs.
Although that could have been the movie theater and not in the actual movie.
Sorry for the giant rant post.
