I just find it hard to believe they're young adults when they don't even talk like teenagers. After the Derpy incident, it's unpredictable whether that kind of talk would be protested or not  |

I always thought of Derpy as the Rainman of Ponies...there's one thing she's phenoinally good at, as defined by her cutie mark...and she epicly fails at everything else...

I can honestly agree with the developers on changing Derpy. Sure, it's mostly harmless but I can see how some people might feel it could be offensive to handicapped people (Do recall it's a show for young people).
What I cannot stand is how offended many in the Brony community are about it. They got their shout out and a few people complained it went too far. The show shouldn't be catering to young adults when it's a show for children. Sure, putting in derpy here or there making cameos, making obscure references, or using certain background ponies in certain ways to give a shout out (Doctor Whooves reference during the Cider competition) is fine.
Giving a background character a fan based personality which might be slightly offensive to a particular part of the show's ideal viewers? Some would say that's crossing it.

That does make sense, although I don't know if little girls would know the meaning behind "derp" or think anything other than that Derpy was a derpy pony Although the fact that the producers actually listened to the fanbase was kind of what made it so cool to me xD |

Derp tends to denote moments of stupidity, or it can be used to call someone stupid, retarded, or dumb. It is similar in some ways to duh.
In the case of "Derpy Hooves" (Or Bubbles), her odd voice and wall-eyed appearances seemed to coincide with a generally stupid or "slow" character, which is why the term is used to denote her.
As such, the name "Derpy Hooves" was slightly insulting to some because they felt it portrayed wall-eyed people as dumb. This was exacerbated by the character's scene in "The Last Roundup", where by all means she appears to be mentally slow, ignorant, and generally clumsy as she carelessly vandalizes a building.

There are, but Derpy's case is quite strongly exaggerated I didn't know the case was actually with wall-eyed people, though. I thought people just didn't like Derpy being slow and derpy. |
