Yes that was a portal. And a stronghold looks like where you found the portal. And im guessing you killed the dragon? ;D

i want to be able to, ummm... close the portal to the nether at will without having to mine it. just curious, not trying to abandon anyone in the nether or anything  brake the purple squares (just found that out by accident? |

Because the nether has no day or night. Thus you cannot sleep. I told you beds were evil in the nether. And frozn wants to build a portal that he doesnt have to break to shut down. With a sticky piston you can move 1 block and its no longer a portal. But im notsure if it works on obsidian or not.

The spawner you can use (the egg.) works much like the eye of ender. You have to use the item rather than drop it. That said other than animals, mob spawners dont work on peaceful.

I believe its called a ghast, but that aside you have to hit its fireball back with a sword, its not easy
