woo set up a family server! i'm surprised that hamachi works so well. while looking around online a lot of people were hating on it. question: can you attach an obsidian block to a sticky piston? i want to be able to, ummm... close the portal to the nether at will without having to mine it. just curious, not trying to abandon anyone in the nether or anything

If you adjust the portal in anyway it turns it off. If you move a block then you have to re ignite the portal. But i suppose you could do that if you didnt mind re igniting it each time...

Yea, it falls after a short time. You have to keep re throwing it until it flies into the ground on its own without droping, then dig your way down and try again.

Dig down. Try not to fall into the end portal lava. You should hit either cobblestone or moss stone. If so you found a stronghold. Or a dungeon, but if the eye led you to it then its probably a stronghold.

is it natural for a strong hold to have cages with animals/mobs/monsters inside.

It seems you can write books now.

Yes. Well dungeons do, does it have iron bar windows that overlook a large cavern filled with lava? Cause thats usually a stronghold. Where as a dungeon just has one room with a couple mob spawners (the cage with the mob in it.) and one-3 chests.
Also write books? Legit. I do not have that update. But it adds another use for the books besides just building bookshelves amd enhancement tables.

No! If you have indeed found a stronghold you may damage the end portal, which forms over a pool of lava, meaning 1 you woukd have no floor, and 2 you would be over lava. In creative thats no biggie, but in regular mode no. I cannot remember the end portals block durability either, i want to say it is like bedrock or obsidian durable, but i cant remember if that is right. So i would say no. Just watch out for silver fish.

That would be a mine shaft. Watch out for spider spawners.

I assume so. Blow that hoe to the bedrock with tnt. Its the best way to find a stringhold, mass excavation.
