small delay. i fell to my death trying my cave short cut. I've suffocated myself trying to make a sand castle  Proper sandstone placement is key. But i have no idear how that works. Course ive drowned trying to put myself out of lava damage so... |

S= stirs going down 1 block at a time
H= hole for sun light aka short cut

Yea. When i build short cuts i use sand in the middle. Like this
BBB
BSB With B being blocks, or stairs. And S being the pillar of sand. That way i can dig it
BBB Out to go down, and replace it to go up.

To answer the fall to death death thing. I want to say falling over 15 blocks unless into water 2+ blocks deep will kill you.
And as for obsidian, it forms naturally when water contacts lava. Idr the exact conditions and sometimes you may get cobblestone. Also you need a diamond pick to mine it so... Better be on the lookout for those diamonds.

Just remembered. You have to let it touch naturally. And where the teo flows meet becomes obsidian. Tho as i said without a diamon pick you cant mind it. And even then it takes forever. I would set difficulty to peaceful while mining it.

how do you get flint and steel (item)?
and where do you recommend making the portal thing? in a cave or out side in plain sun light?

mix flint and iron. or rather craft it, i want to say in the crafting table it should go

but i may have the item placement backwards, also, build the portal as close to your house as possible. that way when the nether owns you, you can run away and heal and such. plus you dont have to trek back home with your loot. also in the nether, take a map and try no to venture far from your portal, the mobs are inifnitely more powerful than overworld ones, excpet maybe the enderman, and will kill you rather quickly. i recommend venturing in on peaceful until youve got the hang of navigating the nether without mobs
