So I saw Space Dandy and I think it came out pretty bad. There are two notable things about this series however- One, I watched the english dub. Yes, this show is already running on adult swim in America. Before the Japanese broadcast, I hear. Two- the show is very much like a vastly inferior version of Sgt Frog, absent minded Narrator + 4th wall jokes and all. Also, breast jokes. Classy. The director of this directed Cowboy Bebop, an ass kicking sci-fi action series. Guess what the director of Sgt frog is directing right now? Yes, Nobunagun, an ass kicking Sci-fi action series. Is this a freaky friday body switch? But yeah from what I can tell this is similar to Cowboy bebop in set up (I still need to actually watch Cowboy bebop) except it's 'funny'. But yeah, it has the space setting and a similar main character in a similar position. I guess this director should stick to what he knows. Some lines got me to chuckle, but honestly I thought both Nobunagun and Noragami were both much more funny with much better action scenes and characters than this show, and more of an overall point. And of course, in terms of comedy anime with zany antics and meta jokes Sgt Frog still probably reigns supreme. I've been trying out a large chunk of the new shows this season and I would say Space Dandy is my least favourite, as at least Super Sonico had absolutely no expectations set out for it. EDIT: In other news, Buddy Complex is interesting. I think Claxus will like it a fair bit. I hadn't actually watched Nobunagun yet...but wait. Director of sgt. frog is directing? I AM GOING TO WATCH THIS RIGHT NOW. THAT'S ALL THE MOTIVATION I NEED.

That possibly explains why both shows have such visual flair, especially Sgt Frog.

That's too long of a wait! I need more NOW! I'm probably going to have to resort to showing it to my friends even vaguely interested in anime.

'World conquest Zvezda plot' is a close second most anticipated anime for me this season. The first episode was so good I've already decided to quote it.
It's about a little girl (read- so loli she still has training wheels on her bike) trying to conquer the world. And being really good at it. This show already seems set to rip some common anime tropes apart, and not just for comedy if the first minute of the episode and some heavy scenes scattered throughout the episode are to be believed. Other than that, the central joke is that all the wackily designed evil commanders and characters you see in shows such as power rangers are actually the group of people who the stereotypical bland protagonist (although he REALLY works here, he doesn't necessarily do anything different to characters such as Naegi or anyone harem protagonist etc but the situation he's placed in really makes his character work) actually joins, and they appear set to be fighting against heroes of justice type super sentai characters and a pretty boy.

Oh hey so funimation's official youtube channel doesn't COMPLETELY hate me.
Currently watching Shiki and Chobits there. Yes, they are two polar opposite animes and it is very fun. Shiki has a great opening... Chobits has a soul crushingly catchy and adorable opening.

So the other day I finished Daily Lives of High School Boys. Am now watching Clannad. Daily Lives of High School Boys is an epic comedy anime. That's all. Oh, and Clannad garbo. (In my opinion.)

I'm mostly just assuming here, but having heard so much about Clannad (some spoilers) and seen some clips, it looks like it's just a slice of life that tries to make you cry, for no other reason than just that. How do I say this... Pity-fishing anime? I may be wrong... But something about the artystyle tells me otherwise.
Oh, and similar experience with Air. Both animes give me that air.

That aside, you're spot on about Clannad (in my opinion.) It also fails at what it tries to do.

There are a bunch of animes that were pretty much adapted by the same studio from visual novels, and angel beats was a novel(?) basically doing the same thing. These animes were of course Clannad, Air, Kannon, and angel beats. Oh, and Haruhi but Haruhi isn't doing the same thing as those shows so I wont count it. Anyway, from what I hear one of them is pretty much mandatory watching. Angel beats was awesome, it made me cry in several places. However, the other shows are basically the same thing, so anyone who watches them after watching the first one will pretty much find it crap.
What's this about pity fishing? Everything ever creates an illusion which you are invested in, then anything that makes you happy or sad is manipulating your emotions.

There's more meaningful ways to go about it. It's like when they put a crying kid before something tragic in movies saying they wanna go home or see someone they obviously never will again. It may be sad, but meh... Alli ever hear about Clannad is how it made everyone cry, and it's so obvious that's its only intent, and it does it just by appealing to a person's basic nature rather than being engaging or meaningful.
Maybe there's something to be said for that, but I'm still calling it a pity-fishing anime.
As for Air, it's almost kinda funny how obvious it is. They just pile on the no-friends thing as her strongest character trait, a condition that makes her cry uncontrollably, and then having the poor girl also get ill and have to use a wheelchair, in constant pain, and... I'm not even going to tell you the ending, geez. But see what I mean?

Clannad's first season was comedy, however. The second season called 'After story' is what people are talking about when they say that it made them cry. After story itself is just about the main couple from the first season living their lives as adults, I hear.
Angel Beats certainly had some thoughtful moments and good characters, but thinking back almost all of them were hospitalised at some points. The parts that made my cry however were the romance sections, Angel Beats also had a lot of humour and even some action. I can't speak for Clannad, I haven't seen one episode, but many consider it the best out of all these shows and as such I don't think it would be as sad as it is if it weren't also meaningful.
Even if they were literally just pity fishing shows, I don't see much of a problem with that either. It's no different to a comedy existing for no other reason than to make people laugh. A show that can provide catharsis of any sort is certainly doing something right, after all, I've seen plenty of shows that have tried to do more but ultimately failed because they were boring to watch and I felt literally nothing while watching them, not even anger. I guess you can really get drawn out of that catharsis if a show tries too hard, though...
Anyway. Since I mentioned it, watch Haruhi if you haven't already. It will certainly make you emote. It's mostly a crazy high school comedy, but it has a ton of other elements to it and the disappearance movie is really emotional. Haruhi might be better to watch than Clannad and such.

I'm, more or less, watching Clanned at a lazy casual rate. So I'm only like maybe 10 episodes in?
