'Tis a shocker. A videogame player not knowing AVGN?
AVGN is the Angry Video Game Nerd and is a character played by James Rolfe (the guy in the GIFs) and using excessive profanity in his language, he rants on various aspects of old-school games.
He's greatly fun, but you need to understand the deep sarcasm and his very foul mouth to understand his acts. It also helps if you have played older games, which is just what he himself mostly does.

No, I wouldn't say that.
James Rolfe is a much more professional, not to mention charismatic, actor in front of the camera and it is the latter reason I myself believe to be the cause of his popularity.
The AVGN character was born from a simple joke he did way back and people obviously instantly loved it.
