A lot of the time these issues can be resolved by fixing the sound settings. I'm not exactly sure why but when the sound settings aren't correct it tends to affect the emulator. So I would look into forums about it that mention sound settings : )
I say this from experience with the Dolphin Game Cube emulator and a Dream Cast emulator : )

Sound settings can help, if you can find one that sacrifices accuracy/quality for speed. Make sure to check video plugins, too, those are generally the biggest changes to speed.
If you haven't already, updating your graphics card drivers may be able to give you a little boost. If you're playing on a large window, making it smaller can help, too.
Lastly, maybe check for any other processes on your computer that may be using up some CPU, or have periodic functions, and try closing them.
