So ive been playing a lot of older games via emulator or on psp go, (you can get ps1 games on the store for next to nothing, or you could anyways, with the ps4 being a thing now idk anymore?) and in doing this ive discovered that some of the games that i enjoyed from years past would perform stellarly with a remake that fixed alot of the problems that they had in the previous iteration.
now i dont want this to seem like a list, more like a what are you currently playing type thread, except its a thread for taking old games and being like "id buy this if they made it again and fixed this, this and this about it."
my first pick is super mario rpg: legend of the 7 stars.
its a gem, really it is. but it has its problems too, for instance the characters aren't really developed that much, i mean, mario bowser and peach have history and dont really need it, but the villains get next to no character dev, and for that matter neither do geno, mallow, or any of the side bosses like booster. so for starts id say to improve this game and remake it (for 3ds, cause it has the buttons for the combat, and its an rpg, so itd be great for trips, the summer time, etc.) 1. flesh out the characters more, give Mallow and Geno more screen time and what not, more for Geno than mallow, i mean Geno is like "im a star, i wanna fix the star road, ima possess this kids action figure because i dont have a body" and thats like it. even in his dailogue in the cutscenes, that is about the sum total of what he says.
ways to do this would be: add "cutscenes" for when you rest at the inns, kinda like the dream pillow thing in nimbus land. but for the party, and just have mario able to talk to everyone, and each time they flesh out a little more about themselves, actually breath of fire iv did that really well, you can set up camp and talk to your party, it serves as a way to remind you what you were doing last, and to flesh out the characters.
second, have more dialogue between the characters and the smithy gang memebers. make the cutscenes before boss fights more cutsceney. and such, not enough to bog down the game, but enough to delve into the story a bit.
third, actually add scenes where smithy and his gang are conversing about their plans. the only time we learn about smithy and his gang is like when you talk to yardiovich, then you dont even see smithy until the last boss fight. thats a waste of what could have been a memorable character. or a memorable cast of characters. sure they have some fleshing, but not really enough by todays standards.
next improve the graphics, dont change the style so much as update it, the game looks and feels like the player characters are immersed in the mushroom kingdom, leave it that way, however, with updated graphics, make the platforms in the same planes and things, part of the problem with 3d platformers that have a fixed camera, is that its hard to make half the jumps because you cant see where you are jumping, the vines in nimbus land are a perfect example.
third, add some extra dungeons, while the game is fairly decent in length, if you are any kind of rpger you dont have to revist any of them at all. that seems like a waste to me, paper mario was great because it made you backtrack, its like you spend the whole game being able to see something and then finally are able to collect it late game, that is a great feeling lol. so you could either do that, or add an extra dungeon, frankly i recommend the second one, extra dungeons like say the star road, would help flesh the game characters out, and give it a post game, smithys dimension would be another cool area for post game. add in some superbosses there and youve got a great post game.
now i suppose i should talk about the combat, its great, its innovative, the only thing i would add, would be that the party members not in the line up, be in sort of a back row, again i will reference breath of fire iv here, the characters in the party not in battle are in the back row, and certain characters do certain things in the back row, for example you could have peach and bowser in the back, and peach would randomly heal the party for free, (itd have to be like a lite healing, but still.)
give the characters not in use something to do. that way at least they "earn" their "free" exp. also add some hidden characters, a party of five is great, but where is luigi? or like kamek. maybe even a toad or something. idk nothing crazy, but itd be something extra. like "hey do this ridiculous sidequest that takes like the whole game to complete and get luigi." kind of thing.
also while im fine with mario being the map character, (it is a mario game after all....) let me switch him out in battle. i hate when an rpg forces you to use the main character for the whole game in battle. i get that its a mario game, but if i want my party to consist of bowser geno and mallow i should be allowed to dang it. besides thatd be a good thing to go with my back row thought, mario could throw hammers at a random enemy for some damage.
i think thats about it for my lengthy rant lol, but i really feel like this stuff would make for a decent remake of a great game.
