I was thinking of trying my hand at some basic art, geometric shapes and light "3D" perspective on 2D art. While I do have a scanner on hand, I'm not the one who uses it primarily nor does it scan to my computer, so I was thinking of using a computer based program instead. . .
but then I realized that the only programs I know about are MS Paint (. . .), Photoshop (Thanks, but it's not in my budget atm) and Paint.net (poor man's Photoshop, but still not what I'm looking for) when it comes to computer art.
I've seen some people drawing with their tablets and i-pads and whatnot, and I would think something comparable exists on the computer, I'm just sorely ignorant of what exactly to look for. Which is probably the reason I'm so terribly vague. So, so, so terribly vague that you're probably tired of reading my dribbling.

Paint is good. I know someone who makes amazing art with it. With a mouse. It's a bare minimum program, sure, but has enough options to draw pro. Windows 7+ Paint, anyway. Well, I respect them more than anyone who uses Photoshop for all these semi-automatic effects and lighting and whatnot.
But from what I hear, GIMP is one of the best alternatives to Photoshop.

GIMP is one of the best alternatives to Photoshop. Speaking from experience.

Besides Paint.NET and GIMP, I've also heard Paint Tool Sai and Adobe Illustrator are good.
