A thread? Why not. Nobunagun is an action series this season that has really caught my attention, so I'll probably be writing some mini reviews here... but discussion is welcome. Still, it bears mention that I might spoil some things so I recommend watching it alongside me (because this is shaping up to be something really worth watching) or steering clear of the thread until you're caught up.
So the second episode is out today and I really like it. The first half was all action and the second half was all character and world building. I'm really hating how some people see a concept that they tag as being ridiculous then think that at best the series will be worth some mindless fun. *Sigh*. The opening and endings were... pretty good. Well, the opening song is phenomenal but I wish that there had been a little more animation to go with it. The ending was fine in both respects, but 'respect for the dead man' is an opening song I've been listening to since I saw the first episode during the middle of last week and I'll probably continue to listen to it for a while yet.
Next episode looks like a training episode, but there's something in the episode preview that makes me slightly worried...

aaaand now that I've caught up I can look at this thread without being spoiled. Just gonna say, this series keeps getting better. It's not exactly on Code Geass tier, but jeez...this series so far is doing pretty much everything right. Cool characters, creative action, touching story, and Asao doesn't feel like filler...though I feel like she may end up actually saving Ogura's life at some point and dying. That promise just seems too much like a foreshadowing moment. But yeah, I haven't seen a character yet that I don't like, or anything for that matter. I only see positives, but they better not pull some crap ending...

This show is based on a manga series that only has 3 volumes out right now, and is still ongoing. The anime itself is only going to last 12 episodes I believe. I think the original creator of the manga himself has a larger of degree over the anime than most original creators do, but I might be wrong and he certainly doesn't have any official role on the team. I can only hope he's being used as an adviser. But yes, this sort of thing usually spells doom for most anime. I'm not sure how much 12 episodes will cover however, so maybe the episodes will only cover the first 3 volumes? In which case there might be a 'read the manga' ending. I can imagine this show is at best testing the waters, and is at worst serving as an advertisement for the manga. (a damn good one) Testing the waters sounds sensible anyway, as I believe this is only the second manga the author has ever created and the first manga he wrote apparently didn't get popular enough for an anime adaption.

It hasn't gone to crap yet, far from it, so support ahoooooy!

It hasn't gone to crap yet, far from it, so support ahoooooy! Plus, even if it doesn't get a 2nd season...there are animes that have had the signs of a terrible ending...yet do well. Soul Eater is a pretty good example; while not accurate to the manga (still in progress at the time), the ending was good. If I recall the series branched off from the manga when the whole Ashera plot came up. Coming up with half of the anime like that and making most of it good (I'm looking at you Arache for sheer crappiness) is uncommon for animes, which seem to act like a lot of books-to-movies; just a heartless inaccurate rehash of the source material.

Episode 3 was my least favourite episode so far, focusing on comedy and general plot progression, but it was necessary and it avoided my major concern based on the episode preview. Also I'm glad Shio isn't overpowered but she takes a long time to learn some combat fundamentals, it's odd that she can't replicate the rush and combat smarts she had during the first two episodes. Or understand the correct method for reducing recoil from her gun, which is something I'd expect a gun nut to know.

She's not "just" a gun nut, and she's a high school girl. She wouldn't have time to test those kinds of things. That aside, I see why episode 3 was your least favorite, though I like the "mentor." Guy certainly knows how to put someone in their place. Oh, and the chalk projectiles.

So there is no reason why I shouldn't have liked episode 4 any less than episodes 1 and 2... but for some reason I wasn't feeling it this week. Maybe it's because I've been watching and really enjoying anime of different types to Nobunagun recently, but as I noted the standard motions this show was going through, I realised part way through the episode that I just wasn't in the mood for a lighthearted action series right now. Oh well.

*Finally watches episode 4* Pretty good, though the setup for JackxSio is weird. Good action though, pretty cool episode all in all. Already bringing in the fanservice though. (Well, episode 3 did that.)

Episode 5... so is Shio forming a harem? Sure looks like it, but I could be wrong. But it would be interesting if that is the case since the harem consists of both males and females. I mean, seriously, that was the most gorgeously animated french kiss ever.
The comedy is starting to grate... they reveal bits and pieces about how the invasion objects work, but nothing substantial such as their motivation. In any case, it looks like all character introductions are out of the way now as the series hits the halfway mark next week.
The potential themes I'm seeing that were brought up this episode included how the E-gene holder's personalities are effected whenever they fight, and how different they are away from combat, for the most part. Jack doesn't seem to change much. Shio hasn't been going crazy like she did in the first episode, either. So I guess the E-gene holders don't really change, making that plot point pointless? It would have been nice to see Shio struggling with the blood thirsty 'Nobunaga' side of herself. That thing in the tank that reminds me of Kyubey is also interesting. What's his deal? We saw him with Nobunaga in a flashback, so I guess he has been collecting the E-genes?
I guess this series will be enjoyable, regardless of however confusing I'm finding its thematic points to be right now.

I fell behind with this one... just watched episodes 6 and 7. Not much is really happening. I guess I set my expectations too high for this one.
