Is there a thread for this? because I can't find one. Anyway...just...just watch for yourself.
I tried to convince myself I wasn't seeing this, but I am. I just don't even know what to say to this. I guess I can start by calling it a cash-in monstrosity that I will never buy. 2DS? Play games in 2D? If I want to do that I'll turn off the 3D on my 3ds, which I do most of the time anyway. Also it's stupidly bulky, but that's just a minor complaint. Rather, the whole concept is rediculous. The 3DS's main selling point was the 3D, and the games. This is just pointless.
...If this wasn't from Nintendo's official channel, I would not believe it.

And that. I WILL say that due to its bulk, it's most likely more durable and has more battery life than 3DS(and it's life is pretty crappy to be honest.) however, both of it's screens are also wide open since it doesn't seem to fold. still...I'd go so far as to call this the xBox one of Nintendo. :/ Seems like everyone needs to have something as crappy as that original concept now. Another rather obvious thing; apparently it's more affordable. So if someone wants to play 3DS games without paying 200 dollars for a 3DS and doesn't care about 3D and Kid icarus...there you go. EDIT2: The 2DS is supposed to be $130. 3DS is 170, and XL is 200. So...eh. with the money you save from buying a 2DS as opposed to a 3DS, you get one game. I'd rather have the 3DS or the XL. Also, their marketing tactic for it is garbage. Play 3DS games....IN 2D!!!

xbox one of nintendo is pretty harsh. Xbone dicks over users with DRM and uninteresting games, forced kinect intergrqation and... you know the rest. 2DS just looks goofy. 2DS will probably be the better option for most people anyway since it's cheaper, doesn't have the 3D effect which parents think might harm the eyes of young children (even if you can turn it off, young kids may not know any better. And no parent bothers with parental controls.) It's not a bad console, not a bad idea. While the machine as a whole really doesn't look right to me... that's basically my only gripe. That and it can't fold. IT CANT. FOLD. I guess Nintendo wanted to place the buttons in a more comfortable position, but again, it just doesn't look right to me and it doesn't look especially portable. The XL is probably the largest this generation but it can fold so... Anyway, I'm fine with this. The only two reasons I'd want one would be if: It had longer battery life. Sometimes I accidentally turn the 3D on by flicking the slider. This can get distracting, (maybe i should permanently turn it off...) If my current 3DS suddenly falls down a well or... breaks. Personally while the system is a pretty backwards idea I think the whole concept of a 3D portable device was a much, much more stupid idea. I mean seriously, A 3D DEVICE THAT HAS MOTION CONTROLS. I hate the 3D function. Adds nothing, adds eye strain, drains battery life... and I can never get it in a comfortable position. I can't keep the device steady. Nintendo's hardware gimmicks are adorable and sometimes fun (touch screens was their best idea ever) but I hope they really think through their next innovations, or bite the bullet and go straight for virtual reality. Breaking down some of the hardware barriers between me and my immersion with the game is very welcome to me. EDIT: Also yeah that one line '3DS games in 2D!' Is rather funny but generally those few seconds just clarified the extent of the game library. Their main marketing tactic for this is simply the functionality and accesibility of the device rather than gimmicks. In fact the marketing strategy for this was basically just telling people what the console could do. That is refreshing. I remember the origional 3DS adverts which had a bunch of people playing 3DS in 3D and going 'whoa! This 3D is great!' At school this caused confusion. Some people didn't realize it was a next gen leap and didn't want to buy the console because they thought that all they'd be getting was an extra 3D gimmick, not realizing that there was a ton of other functionality and games. The 3D function probably killed some of the system's early sales, that combined with the lackluster selections of games u;on launch. All I had to play for a few months on the system were Rayman 3D, the streetpass games, and my old DS games, which looked worse on the system. Most noticeably, pokemon white. Yeah. Now it's one of my favorite consoles because of all the good games and online services, so I can respect the 2DS basically saying 'we got a huge game library! And online shopping! And local and online multiplayer! At a cheap price! So straightforward. I hope nintendo keeps this up, but you need a real upgrade for your real successor to the 2DS next time and not just a stripped down, more accessible version of what you already have. I hope lots of people who don't already have 3DS systems buy this.

I agree, it'd be stupid to buy one if you already have a 3DS. I don't have one though so if this is cheaper ...

Their goal with this was to aim for the part of the little kid demographic that doesn't already have a 3DS. And they probably succeeded there, the thing not having a hinge makes it much more durable than the other models and if you don't want your kid using the 3D why not save $40 getting a model that doesn't even have it? still...I'd go so far as to call this the xBox one of Nintendo. :/ Seems like everyone needs to have something as crappy as that original concept now. No. Even playing along with Microsoft's spin on why they did their things, they're doing ridiculous things to take the industry toward digital distribution that's already possible on the current generation of consoles. The most ridiculous thing here is that thing's shape, and even that is entirely justified by the fact that it no longer has a hinge to break.

That comment was before I thought about it more/learned more about it. Don't take it so seriously.

Since it's coming out the same day as Pokemon X and Y, it can be a way to save $40 when getting another handheld console to trade with yourself. However, that's only one good side I see from it.

The 2DS is just... a poor execution of a somewhat good idea. Idea: Make a more affordable 3DS. Execution: Remove the 3D feature, making some games much harder to play, while not even making it much cheaper. Idea: Make a more durable 3DS. Execution: Take away the hinge and expose the screens to scratches, while simultaneously making the system less portable. Idea: Make this thing we just made more resistant to screen scratches. Execution: Make a slip cover that zippers shut and adds nothing in the way of protection of the console.

The screens aren't very susceptible to scratches and it's more comfortable to hold than the original. Also feels less flimsy than the others. That said, I'm selling it for the New3DSXL. Ironic, I thought this thing was stupid. I actually really liked it. Mono speaker is lame though. That's my biggest issue, you pretty much need headphones or suffer terrible sound. Also, the only game harder to play is SM3DL.

Meh, I guess. But still, as long as they don't try to make a New Nintendo 2DS, I'll be happy.

I know, that's one of the reasons I said that. Also, I can just imagine them saying "Hey! This one has a full on second circle pad for a c-stick! Buy it immediately!" Then, you bring it home and realize that you just spent a bunch of money for the equivalent of a circle pad pro and the ability to play top dollar games on a system that is so cluttered together by that point that it's hard to breathe without pushing something! In the words of Mana:
YOU'RE EVIL!!!
Also, I believe it's time for a bad pun. Ummm... Introducing, the next gen gaming handheld, the Nintentoast!
