Namely, because it's an uncooperative pile of s***. See that sidebar there on the left? I don't want it there. I don't want it anywhere. Problem: If you can name a solution that isn't hilariously obscure or counterintuitive, chances are I've tried it. No, seriously, go ahead, suggest something. Attachments:

Macs are worse.
My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > Windows Classic View

I've used one once. Its shortcuts were backwards from anything ever, but aside from that I don't remember it being too horrible... Ignoring the proprietary hardware thing I'm pretty sure is a thing and the fact that I only used it for 5 minutes. Tried it. In fact it's already set to that. Still there. Also, a more interesting problem: the Command Prompt seems to have become incapable of anything but counting my keystrokes (i.e. no matter what key(s) I press it just cycles through 0-9).

Can you find anything about 'navigation pane?'
But assuming you're on XP, the classic view really should have done it...

Can you find anything about 'navigation pane?' Not in Folder Options. Where should I be looking? And yes, I did notice I neglected to mention I'm running XP. Also, that Command Prompt problem you didn't even notice I edited into my previous post was just a matter of I deleted some registry keys I shouldn't have. It's resolved now.

Well, it's called the navigation panel on Windows 7.
What about Control Panel > Folder Options > General Page, have you checked there?
I'm not actually sure if that's any different. But all I can find regarding the sidebar points to the same thing. Classic folders is supposed to be how you get rid of that sidebar... So all I can guess is that there may be something wrong somewhere.

Windows really is a pile of s***. That's why I only use my computer for writing stories and playing Elsword now.

What about Control Panel > Folder Options > General Page, have you checked there? Control Panel > Folder Options and Tools > Folder Options are the same thing. Exactly. I've even tried solutions that involve messing around in the registry, and still I get no results.

MACS ARE GOOD. I use a mac... its only real downside is it cannot play many games. Also, my specific mac is incredibly out of date.

SO, HEY, HERE'S SOME GOOD NEWS. I FOLLOWED THE ADVICE FROM F***ING MICROSOFT THEMSELVES (only backwards since I'm trying to do the exact opposite thing) AND GUESS WHAT THE F*** HAPPENED? YEP, THAT'S RIGHT, THEIR SOLUTION MADE IT WORSE. NOW NOT ONLY IS THE PROBLEM NOT SOLVED, BUT NOW EVERY TIME I OPEN A FOLDER IT COMES UP AS A SEARCH RESULT.AND I CAN'T EVEN FIX IT WITH AN EXPORTED REGISTRY FILE FROM BEFORE THIS.EDIT: Aside from the fact that I can never trust Microsoft for anything from this point onward (which, honestly, they shouldn't be trusted in the first place, so that's a good thing), I've fixed it. But I still have the same problem I started this thread for, so... yeah, Windows is still The Worst Thing, it's just that I can occasionally bend it to my will with the power of pure rage. EDIT 2 - ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: As much as I hate Windows, I do have to give them a bit of credit; they literally built into their OS a way of pretty much hacking the entire thing however you see fit. All I have to do is figure out how to edit the command for Win+E: The Shortcut in the registry and my problem will be solved. Because in their infinite stupid they decided it'd be a good idea to have the default behavior of their shortcut entirely ignore the actual settings in the program the shortcut opens. Isn't that great?

Well, to start with something obvious that hasn't been mentioned here... View > Explorer Bar > Folders
And see if you can find something like this: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer > Classic Shell
I can't really do much since I'm on Windows 7, but if nothing is working then I'm convinced a setting is screwed up somewhere... As a last guess I would take a shot at looking into services. Not sure if there's actually a service that has anything to do with Windows Explorer, but at the very least you could just download a services repair tool.
I remember for me at least, a simple service repair fixed what days of editing settings, registries, and services didn't, and even something that bothered me for over a year as a side effect (having to restart two services to allow music streaming every time I turned the computer on). Well, not to really get your hopes up anyway...
Still, I don't really think Windows or Macs are bad, but Macs are way worse off just by the fact that tons of programs don't work for it.

Well, to start with something obvious that hasn't been mentioned here... View > Explorer Bar > Folders Tried it. Not sure where that is. It's not that, either. If you'll look in my edit I apparently made while you were posting you'll notice I figured it out; I was using Win+E: The Shortcut to open it, and apparently Win+E: The Shortcut has a command line argument in its command that makes it automatically bring the thing up. Which completely ignores the actual settings of Windows Explorer because Microsoft is stupid. So yeah, just removing a "/e" from a registry key I've not yet found will make it work as intended. Just more evidence of Windows' failings. Back when I had 7 some service that allows internet access was causing an svchost.exe to just completely eat my entire computer. Of course, now that you say that it occurs to me that that was probably a really simple fix... But if I hadn't gotten rid of it I never would've gotten Ubuntu, so I regret nothing. Same problem Ubuntu has. Same problem every OS but Windows has. That's the only reason Windows is still a thing, is because everybody uses it, meaning it gets all the software support, meaning everybody uses it. It's like a monopoly, only nobody does anything about it for some reason. But whatever, the fewer people use the other OSes the fewer people feel inclined to make viruses for them. EDIT: Okay, I was wrong, this isn't going to be fixed with a registry edit, it's doing it when I start the program from the command line. EDIT 2 - THE REVENGE: Okay, I was wrong again, it does it any time I don't specify a path. So all I need to do is add a comma to some random registry key I still haven't found yet and it should be fixed. ...Assuming that the key I'm looking for exists to be edited... ...which it does.

Also that doesn't really have any relation to my problem (which, by the way, I resolved in that last post. It was a pretty simple registry edit, as I expected). Also, what is this Level 2 qualification in IT you speak of?
