Alex had woken up the next day and everything seemed normal. When he considered how weirdly written the mail that had been sent to him was, and the strangeness of the subject, he now fully dismissed it as a prank of some kind. That was a shame, that sounded interesting. He was on his way home from college as he wondered about what may have happened if that was true. He sighed and looked around. Same looking cars, same looking people, same looking everything. He was all fine and comfortable with it, but when he'd been promised something that sounded so interesting, it made him feel just a little dejected. A fish swimming happily in the warm waters who is promised with flight, only for the promise to be promptly forgotten.
Just then, he did see something a little bit out of the ordinary. Everyones' eyes were silver. grey, even. And they were looking at him now. Why were they looking at him? He hadn't done anything strange, had he? He noticed that the air looked like smoke, and it made his breathing feel uncomfortable. He coughed once, then saw that the sky was blood red, intimidating and unreal. The cars had stopped, the people had stopped, everything green and natural was now black and rotting. This was a little bit too interesting a little too fast. The people's faces scrunched up into little balls then they opened, eyes. Or rather, one eye, as large as the heads they came from. They popped off the people and began slivering around, circling him, their attention only on Alex. They didn't do anything however, they simply watched. Unnerving, but harmless.
"GO AWAY!" Alex yelled suddenly, and began kicking them away. All of a sudden the eyes turned red, and began staring at him with such ferocity that it felt like they were burning his soul.
"So, you're the source of the eyes." Said a voice a little ways off. A man Alex hadn't noticed before was standing there next to a building. A man wearing a black coat, and a black hat. Alex felt a shiver go down his spine but at the same time he was glad to see him, and was quite glad when he noticed that some of the eyes started looking at the newcomer instead.
"This is certainly interesting. I haven't seen these eyes for a long time." He said, bending down to stroke one. The eye appeared to calm down.
"what the h*** are they?" Asked Alex angrily, stepping over them and marching towards the man.
"I would ignore them if I were you, they are simply observers." Said the man, looking directly into one.
"You're rather similar to the people here, aren't you?" He said out of the blue, his gaze intent on the bewildered looking eye.
He got up, and walked over to Alex.
"They seem drawn to you. Clearly, you are of significance to warrant their attention. Don't disappoint them, they can't do anything significant to us... but it's bad karma." He said, his eyes were unfocused, as though he didn't quite understand what he was saying.
Alex's steely expression returned. He tried to ignore the eyes, just as he would anyone else.
"Who are you?" He asked, folding his arms.
"This is where you face bad news... does the name Tenebrae mean anything to you?" Asked Tenebrae, looking at Alex at a side angle.
Alex processed the information, then it hit him. Curses. He turned tail and began running for his life, running back into the wooded area and across the road he had come from.
Tenebrae's image seemed to flicker, then fade, leaving behind an eye, which quickly followed Alex. Others did too, others spontaneously lost focus and subsequently died right on the spot.
Alex deviated from the path once he was in the wood. It was quite small, and ended quite quickly, leading onto an open park in which Alex knew he would be quickly found and killed. As Alex looked to the side, he noticed Tenebrae flickering, and walking towards him. Even though he was only walking, he seemed to be closing in on Alex who was pelting towards him. Eyes appeared to be everywhere, on the trees, below his feet, everywhere. The wooded area became narrow and eventually ended, and Alex found himself at the other end of the field. Tenebrae stood a way off in the middle, then disappeared.
"This is interesting. But for someone who the eyes seem to follow, you are rather useless. Not even the most basic understanding of spacial manipulation. I can teleport, see? It's very basic but it can leave me with a stiff neck in the morning. Still, always nice to stretch the gray matter. Obviously, as a human you only truly care about yourself right now... arrogant of one so powerless." Said Tenebrae, leaning against a fence.
"I've asked who... but what the h*** are you?" Asked Alex, gripping his chest. He never exercised, and already had painful stitches in his stomach, and it meant catching his breath was difficult.
"Just another runt of someone who destroys lots of places... well, despite what you've been told by a little annoying rogue, I'm not here for you. I'm simply studying the humans to add to our encyclopedia of the universe before we obliterate it. Not sure why we have to obliterate it... I'd talk to lord Erebus if I were you. Anyway I'm not under specific orders to kill you... but rest assured I will, when you can actually stand against me..." Tenebrae seemed to be mumbling to himself more than anything. It was rather off putting.
"Then why did you try to kill me?" Asked Alex, now regaining his energy.
"They follow you... I've only seen them once before, and one who the eyes follow... is one person who has the potential to stand against lord Erebus, my master. So, you have to die. I may regret this later, but I'll certainly regret killing you now more, so I'll minimise my losses and let you live. Oh, and here." Tenebrae held his hand out and a book appeared. An eye appeared to be on it, faced backwards so it was pressed up against it. Tenebrae gently brushed it off.
"I swear there are more and more of those things... anyway, take this." He mumbled, chucking it over to Alex.
"Its a good read." He told him before he flickered out of sight. Everything seemed normal now and the eyes began to dissipate, leaving only a few who seemed to follow Alex. It looked like the people Alex had seen previously looked normal now... but Alex could still see eyes.
He turned around and looked at them, still holding the book.
"Whose eyes are those..." He whispered, then he opened the book, the cover of which was just plain black. Inside were thick blocks of text detailing ideas behind the manipulation of space and energy, like what Tenebrae had been doing.
Alex smiled, then recalled that Tenebrae had mentioned a rogue, who he connected to the person who had sent him the warning. He decided to head home, smiling to himself. Things were finally getting interesting.
