Meanwhile, at the far edges of the galaxy...
"This place is dull. Completely devoid of life. Nothing interesting, nothing worth destroying. To think that I deigned to show my illustrious face in this backwater galaxy and its residence cant even pretend to have any intelligence. Tell me No.230, what name do the locals use for this galaxy?" Spoke a shadowed man speaking from high above on a dark throne. His voice was loud and intimidating, however he spoke every word with such casual boredom that he sounded dead inside.
"Just give me a moment my lord..." Replied someone who looked to be comprised of nothing but shadows.
"The most civilized planet calls this galaxy 'the milky way', your excellence." He replied after a short moment.
"What a ridiculous name. Hardly speaks volumes about their self esteem when the name is so very stupid. Is the language translator online?" Spoke the man again.
"Yes, it has been since we entered the region, your grace. Lets see... a planet called earth has invented most of the languages in the galaxy, and a fair number more than usual. It appears they cant decide on one or two, they have hundreds." Replied the shadow.
"No.157, why are these people so ridiculous?" Asked the man again.
A different but identical looking shadow spoke up, he was performing the same indefinable actions on the other side of the largely empty room.
"They appear to be stubborn, sir."
"I see..."
There was a silence as the man made sounds with his vocal cords, each of varying pitches and lengths. The shadows didn't seem to register their leader's actions.
"What strange vocal patterns... pah, speaking in their tongue feels filthy. And this is their most popular language, I assume?"
The shadows all nodded in unison, and what followed was a long silence.
Things seemed surreal in the room. There seemed to be nothing solid about it, it was so dark that it felt like anything imagined would come to life. The shadows that rose out from the ground and stood in neatly ordered rows were only definable by a white outline that constantly seemed to change, and they had no facial features. The man sitting high above them on a throne adorned with shining silver jewels was the only place that seemed visible, it was as dark as the rest of the place, and the man himself only barely more visible than his subordinates. He had an air about him that appeared to echo his environment- pure darkness.
Finally, he spoke up.
"Engage the transformation process. We shall mimic what they refer to themselves as 'human'.
"Right away my Lord." They all replied in perfect unison as they began molding the darkness around them.
There was a twisting feeling as the world seemed to change, the darkness became slowly more definable, every time it twisted more outlines began to appear. The previously stick like shadows grew out more human features, including a face then clothes. The limits of the room became definable, they too gained features, such as windows revealing the boundless beauty of the stars and the shadows gained control panels glowing with identical buttons. Soon, colour also filled in, light coming in from nearby suns cast the room in an ominous twilight, shadows were where they were meant to be and soon after that torches also appeared to finish the effect, they appeared along the walls and silver flames spontaneously lit. When it was finished, all of the shadows were identical, pale men wearing black suits with silver ties, all working methodically on their similarly coloured control panels. The floor appeared to be made of a black metal, as did the walls, reminding one of marble. It certainly did not look like the interior of the space ship that it was.
Finally, the man. He stood up from his throne which had barely changed, and he too was now human. His pale skin greatly contrasted that of his surroundings, more so than even the shadow's new bodies did. He was wearing a long black cape, it had a silver trim and the only object coloured gold in the room- a simple golden circle on the back. He was tall and muscly, but he didn't look the brute and most of his skin was covered. In fact, only his face was visible, since he wore gloves and a black suit similar to that of the shadows underneath. A mirror appeared out of the ground and he took a look at his new, grand appearance.
"The human form is hideous." He said immediately.
"Its only for the period of time we spend here, Your excellency." Responded a shadow.
"Quiet, No.482!" He exclaimed, angrily smashing the mirror.
"Please, my lord, calm down." Responded the shadow again.
The shadows all turned upon No.482. No one had ever spoken up against their leader before and lived to tell the tale.
The leader's eyes turned to steel. Literally, what were previously calm silver eyes turned black with rage. He stormed down the stairs and walked among the shadows. They all immediately stepped out of the way. He was easily able to find the deficient shadow, as he towered over the shadows even though they were of the same elevation.
He quickly found the shadow and picked him up with ease and without hesitation, and held him aloft. But something was wrong.
"I see your not only mentally deficient, but physically deficient as well." He sighed and dropped him to the ground, creating a loud thud.
He sighed. "There is always one... well, there hasn't been one since galaxy No.10204782." He reflected sadly.
"Can someone explain his physical deficiency?" He asked.
"Uh, yes your majesty, this defect appears to be quite regular within humanity. Actually, within many species. I believe we encountered animals that reproduce biologically a short while ago, rather than how you create us, as it has always been. I believe we are all 'males' while this defect appears to be 'female'." Explained the shadow.
The man slammed his fist on the control panel.
"I have NEVER understood that biological set back, I mean, what if all the males or females suddenly die out? That leaves half a species doomed to extinction!" He yelled loudly.
"I know my lord, it has always confused me too, but it appears as though human newborns require time to mature within the body of the females before they are born." The shadow further elaborated.
"Why cant it be instantaneous?" He asked rhetorically as he marched his way back up to his throne.
"Well, regardless of a personality defect he-"
"Excuse me, she, my lord, sorry to but in." A shadow corrected quickly.
"SHE, has no place here. Last time a shadow had a gender defect the rest of the shadows went awol. Something crazy clicked in their minds and I couldn't get them off of the defect. I was sure never to make any shadows like that again, I'm so glad you're all better than those other ones." The man rambled.
"What shall we do with her, your grace?" Asked a shadow.
"No.103, take her somewhere and kill her, out of my site. Explore the new ship while we're at it, find a good name. Oh!" He said, clapping his hands together as No.103 took the female away, leaving the room through a door.
"Naming time, sir?" Asked a shadow.
"Yes, now, what strikes fear into the human mind? Something that screams 'death', 'pain', and 'destruction?" Asked the man dramatically.
"Well, here are some possible names, my lord." Said a shadow.
"Dark."
"No."
Darkness."
"No."
"Gun."
"No."
"Twilight."
"No."
"Hell"
"No."
"Satan!"
"Yes! Wait, nah..."
"Listening."
"What? No."
"Nuclear."
"No."
"Nine."
"No."
"Eleven."
"No, wait, those are numbers. Try looking elsewhere, like, what do their elderly, or ancestors hate?"
"Time?"
"No! Older!"
"Ah, how about some Gods from the ancient nation of Greece? Zeus?"
"No!"
He flicked through some more before finally reaching one.
"Erebus? The personification of darkness." Suggested a shadow.
Something clicked in the man's brain.
"Yes, Yes! Its old, it represents evil, it births more evil, yes! I like it! But who is this 'lord' person you keep referring to me as?" Asked the man.
"Lord, my Lord? Its a sign of respect, that your in charge."
"Lord Erebus! I like it! Wait, is there something better than that?" Asked the newly dubbed Erebus.
"King? Master? Emperor-"
"EMPEROR EREBUS!" Yelled Erebus.
Erebus walked straight up to the window that was now looking upon the solar system in which earth resided.
"Look out earth, I'm going to wipe you and your stupid dominant race off of the face of MY universe!" Erebus yelled.
"Why do we do this everywhere we go..." Mumbled a shadow.
"Eat the cretin, No.293." Erebus ordered, and the shadow obeyed immediately, eating the one who had spoken up, tearing apart limbs in order to make the mouthfuls more bite sized. No sounds were made besides the chewing and crunches, not even the victim made a sound.
"I'm actually getting used to being human, this language, this body, these new emotions... I could of seen what all the fuss over multiple genders was, too. I guess that female defect was right, I could get used to it." He mumbled to himself.
"No.689, bring me another defect!" Erebus demanded.
"We'll have to find more on earth, I'm sorry my Lord Erebus." He replied.
Erebus groaned, and nodded.
"All the more reason to go there, however, I cant break from my usual routine. Send No.1 down to earth. And tell him his new name is... wiggles. No! Tenebrae."
"Who do you want to inform him, Your majesty?" Asked a shadow.
"I don't care! You're all the same anyway!"
And with that Erebus returned to his throne, and waited impatiently for his chance to destroy earth and leave the empty galaxy, unaware that above his head, an eye had opened up on the wall, and had begun to watch.
"This place is dull. Completely devoid of life. Nothing interesting, nothing worth destroying.
