"You're a broken piece of trash." Said Ven as they sat at the table.
Ash smiled a bit at the notion.
"Trash? I guess. Suppose I can only go up from here." He responded casually, bandaged up in rags and sitting stiffly at the table, being fed by Lily.
Ven groaned.
"So anyway, Ash-" He began.
"Ash? Makes me sound like I burnt out. How about a name like... Fireblitz?" He interjected. Ven paused and continued.
"Ash- why the hell did you tell that knight that me and Lily should join? Do they even enroll females?" He asked.
Lily pouted and Ash chuckled.
"I couldn't leave you guys behind for anything now. Your stuck with me now and I'm going to drag you along with me weather you like it or not." He stated, grinning moronically.
"What about your parents Lily? The farm?" Asked Ven.
"They can do without us. It's about time we got out of this rut anyway, right?" She said.
Rut. First time she'd ever used that word. Ven pondered that for a moment. He hadn't much contemplated his years in Ashwood, his life. No drama and no parents besides Lily's who were never around. Essentially just Lily and the other locals. He out the window at the tree. He would have been content laying there with Lily until the end of this days. Was Ash going to take that away from him?
"Yeah, come on guys. We know almost nothing about the world, I mean did you SEE that guy's sword? I felt like a god just holding it and feeling the magic flowing through me!" Ash exclaimed.
"Yeah, it was really cool but look at you now! Take better care of yourself." Said Lily.
Ven chuckled a bit. Ash wouldn't last a minute in the knights, he'd simply run headlong into an arrow or an outstretched sword.
Ven got up, now fully submitted to his fate.
"I'll go and talk to the knights. Ask if they'll escort us when your better." He said, leaving through the door.
Not long later Ven was nursing himself some beer opposite Largo at the inn, where the knights were staying. It was built almost specifically for pilgrimages long ago.
"So that kid was serious?" Said Largo, slurring words.
"Looks like it. He's dragging me and Lily along with him, too." Confirmed Ven.
"Madman. So when do you think he'll recover?"
Ven chuckled in retrospective.
"He hasn't exactly been in peak physical condition since we met him, really... he keeps finding ways to break his bones."
Largo frowned.
"Don't insult me boy, my pride is wounded enough as it is. Should have sliced him up when I had the chance, really, he wont last long. A knight must preserve life, not win every battle. Rule number 1 at knight school." He vaguely quoted.
Ven glanced at the bracelet for a moment but decided not to dwell on it for now and masked his expression with his flask.
"He'll be fine by the time your ready to leave, on schedule." Ven finally answered.
Largo nodded.
"Good. Well then I'll escort you to someone already taking an aspiring student out to the knight school at Akis. Our regular path isn't too far off where they'll be traveling anyway." Largo said, nodding.
"Well then, thanks for the drink." Said Ven, finishing up and leaving.
Largo stared at the flask for a moment.
"Hey, kid! SINCE WHEN WERE YOU OLD ENOUGH FOR THIS?" He yelled after him.
Ven chuckled and cracked his knuckles as he hurried off back home.
A few days later the trio were waiting with Largo as the other knights got prepared. The town gates. Beyond all there was outside Ashwood were empty fields, rolling hills and nothing in sight for miles around. It was like and endless green desert and was what contributed so heavily to why no one bothered leaving Ashwood.
"It'll be about a month before you reach the academy. Only a few days until we meat the guide and the other student. Geez this is why we should just take the horses on pilgrimages... tradition my but! Why don't we go back to using sticks instead of swords like we used to hundreds of years ago?" He exclaimed.
"Bring it on. This is going to be awesome!" Yelled Ash, jumping from side to side.
Days past, and to Ven there was literally nothing in sight except for the same shade of green stretching in every direction. And blue. Not a cloud in the sky right now. It felt like every step he took was just walking on the spot.
"I think my feet are about to drop off." He complained, gasping between breaths. He was used to hard work but this took the cake, at least he usually had adequate sleep most nights!
Ash looked confused.
"Doesn't feel like any time has passed to me." Said Ash, shrugging.
It was Ash. He didn't function like normal human beings, with all that pesky logic and awareness of surroundings.
"Lets sit down for a bit." Said Largo, who looked as equally tired as Ven." It was on that order that everyone collapsed, lying down. Ash was left standing. He looked around then slowly lowered himself downwards to the ground.
He scotched up next to Ven, who was gently massaging his foot.
"You don't seem into this. You ok?" He asked Ven.
Ven looked away and bit his lip.
"Well... it had to happen sometime. I'll warm up to the idea eventually but..." He glanced over at Lily, who had barely made a word recently. She stared up at the sky, vacant.
"She also seems pretty tired. Was it something I said?" Asked Ash, concern painted on his face.
Ven thought similar things too. She was never usually this quiet, or eager to explore. Something felt off.
"It was probably you, honestly. She's probably just trying to wrap her head around how fast everything happened. You appeared then dragged us on a journey..." He theorized, trailing off.
"I hope thats all it is." Said Ash glumly.
Suddenly, there was a loud flash and Ven doubled over backwards, twitching but otherwise unable to move. Ash looked on to see someone walking slowly towards them with a heavy looking sword. His long white coat showcased crackles of dark coloured sparks coiling around his body and the sword in particular.
The fringe of his black hair covered his eyes and as he drew closer he looked upwards, looking at them with red eyes.
"Your in my way. Leave." He demanded, voice laced with that of a man who was always dead serious.
Ash smiled a bit at the notion.
"Trash? I guess. Suppose I can only go up from here." He responded casually, bandaged up in rags and sitting stiffly at the table, being fed by Lily.
