Eric's parents were tied up with income, but they took Eric in for a few months. Me and Mary tried to start off our relationship right- We first uploaded our game onto a digital distributer, the sales were actually alright at about hundred total around the world, which sustained us long enough for us to find and rent a simple 3 bedroom house, using our combined savings our parents had set aside for us since birth. We didn't have much left, but we were doing ok. We made games in our spare time. That took us one busy year, more or less, it passed us by so quickly...
2021, March 6th, Smith residence.
I woke up feeling incredibly groggy. Today, I had work.
However, as I was making breakfast for myself and Mary, I heard the doorbell ring.
I walked Answered it cautiously. I was still in my dressing gown.
Standing there was Eric. He looked so much older now, it was as if he had had to catch up on his lost seven years of experiences and growing maturity in but one year. He was dressed in smart casual getup, he had a beard. I barely recognised him.
He smiled warmly.
"Smith." He said happily.
"Hi. Eric." I responded warmly.
There was a silence.
"It's been ages, hasn't it? Come in. And call me Mark." I said seriously, stepping aside to let the relic inside.
Soon, I had made a cup of tea and me and Eric sat alone together.
"Where is Mary?" Asked Eric, calmly.
"She's upstairs, asleep. Try not to be too loud." I answered.
"I wouldn't dream of it." Said Eric, smiling.
I sighed, and sipped a my tea. He had to be here for a reason. I decided to bite the bullet.
"So, why are you here? This cant simply be catching up on old times. I know you, you haven't made a single joke since getting here." I said, making a joke of my own to soften the ice.
"No getting past you. I'll be blunt then- my father got fired from work, can find another job. They can sustain themselves on benefits and their pension in a few years... but they cant afford to keep me under the same roof." He said.
I thought he was going to be blunt.
"Work. Surely you can pay for yourself?" I said, trying to be sympathetic. However, I knew where this was going to lead and I knew I wouldn't be able to stop it.
"Thats the thing- I've missed out on seven years worth of education. Seven years, Smith. And I don't want to go back to college, I'd be a laughing stock and it would waste far too much time." He explained.
"Oh, surely it cant be that bad-" I began.
"No no no, not that I'm not going to learn. I think I can get an apprenticeship wit the army. But I'll need to be nearby, I'll need transport." He interrupted, trailing off.
"So, you want to live here. Free accommodation with your best buddy, and you want us to drive you?" I confirmed with disbelief in my eyes.
"I can take the bus. It will only be for a few months, then I'll join the army and be out of your hair for good, Smith." Said Eric, pleadingly.
"And when are you going to move in?" I asked.
"I could stay right now if I want. I got nothing to move." Said Eric.
I looked at him and narrowed my eyes. Surely he has something... but whatever, I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.
"Stay for tonight. I'll ask Maria and I'll give you an answer in the morning." I said before going upstairs and getting dressed.
"I have work. Don't wake up Maria, and don't scare her when she wakes up." I said before leaving and slamming the door behind me.
Why me?
