2013, April 2nd, the forest.
After I had drifted to sleep that night, I had a strange, hazy dream, like watching static on a television.
I jolted awake, with an awful headache that was not there before. I rubbed my sore head and had a look at my archaic wristwatch, nearly torn apart from wear and tear. It read 2:32am.
I leaned back against the cold rock and swore slowly, nice and drawn out.
I leaned my head slightly to the side, still feeling incredibly groggy. The lights were out in in the cave where me and Eric had been, it was pitch black.
Sighing, deciding to look for Eric, I got myself woozily to my feet, and stumbled down into the black void.
It was pitch black. All traces of light were now missing, it felt like I was suffocating. I heard labored breathing, and began to panic.
"Eric? Your not playing a prank, right?" I yelled out at the top of my voice into the endless darkness.
There was of course no reply, and the breathing was now stronger, it felt like it was all around me.
It was me... I was terrified, surely breathing isn't heard inside your head? I felt like I had become none existent, or dead, maybe, floating through darkness.
I came crashing back down to reality when I finally touched a wall, I jumped back, scared for my life as I touched the cold surface.
It was then that I saw a light, square, and staring ominously at it. As I moved towards it, it suddenly disappeared.
My head began throbbing in time with every heartbeat. It was like I was being mentally assaulted by fists that hit my brain directly like actual blows. Must have been my blood pressure, I was close to passing out from utter terror.
As I moved around some more, I eventually tripped. The square once again lit up as I collided with something, and it illuminated the nearby space. I saw a body, covered head to toe in robotic strapping, wires, injections and a helmet.
Behind it was a switch, I turned it on.
I was suddenly blinded by the glare of the light, but after a few minuets my eyes focused and I spied the figure.
It was Eric, hooked up to some sort of screen.
I walked over to the square, a computer screen. There was no keyboard or mouse, anything, and it was just white background with no information. Must have gone to sleep as I was walking towards it, the room I was in was also around a corner.
I clutched my head and decided to get my head in gear, shaking it vigorously. Eric, get Eric out of the device.
I turned off the machine, completely unsure of what I was doing, and began to carefully get Eric out of the machine.
After a few minuets, I had him unhooked. He simply appeared to be sleeping now.
I was never going to be able to explain this... Looking around the cave, I found a blanket and wrapped him in it. I searched around for anything else of value, like an explanation as to how Eric ended up strapped to a strange machine, but nothing. There was no way I'd be able to explain this. Luckily for me, me and him lived alone in separate apartments. Spent every penny we had, but it was worth it, we both lived close to both the college and not long away from the university we wanted to go to, as well.
Either way, I decided to take him home to my house.
5:13am, I finally got home after having to carry Eric the whole way there. I got lucky, thankfully, no one came out at night. So I didn't look suspicious although I wouldn't rule out cars and people watching from their windows. I pushed the thought out of my mind as I lay Eric down in my bed, and went to sleep on my grubby sofa.
I was zoning out in afternoon class when the teacher asked me in for my essay. Curses, Eric always chose the worst times for these things, futhermore I was incredibly tired and Eric had refused to wake up since removing him from the machine. I wondered if he were trapped in virtual world somewhere, or a dream, or maybe the machine had stolen his life force... I scolded myself. Ridiculous notions. Probably just a brain scan.
"... Mr Smith?" Asked the teacher for the third time.
I nodded in response.
"I wont ask again. Your Essay on shakespeare's poem?" She asked.
I tried not to groan in distaste.
"... I'm sorry, I'll bring it in tomorrow." I responded. The teacher rolled her eyes and continued on with the lesson. Thought for sure I'd get a detention, but I guess it just doesn't work that way...
I found myself in a state of awake sleep. My head still hurt and I felt like complaining and complaining... it was just one of those sucky days.
Regardless, when I got back home, I noticed that Eric was still asleep.
I had left food for him for when he woke up, but it was untouched.
"Your an annoying little guy aren't you? One more day then your going home." I thought to myself.
I then considered dialing 999. But, I was too lazy and the case is pretty ludicrous... I'd never find the rock again and I'm not too fond of going back with Eric, either.
I looked over at Eric as I slumped on the sofa.
"Miss you already, you chirpy little..." I began, but I finished my sentence with well deserved snoring.
