2013, April 1st, a forest in england late night.
It was dark, the fullmoon shone brightly casting a peaceful gloom over the forest. The trees swayed gently in the warm winds and the animals slept peacefully, leaves crunched gently underfoot, as we walked like blind men, unable to determine what sound the next step would make.
Me and my friend were walking along this beaten path. I'm not entirely sure why we went out this evening. My friend, Eric Mayson, just phoned me up and asked if I wanted to go out. I wasn't sure weather that meant a thrilling party or maybe he'd drag me to one of his most anticipated science fiction epics, I, previously having had to spend many, many torturous hours watching all of star treck and star wars, occasionally even an obscure japanese anime or two, none of which I understood, mostly due to fatigue.
But no, this evening, Eric wanted to drag me out to a haunted experience many months early for the hollow halloween holidays, but had still kept in the spirit of this arduous day by turning up dressed as a ghost, trying to scare me on arrival and then calling out 'April fools!' although I think he somewhat missed the point.
My wandering thoughts were interrupted by the little ghost next to me.
"Hey, Smith! You awake?" It said, waving it's hands in front of my face, the fleshly arms breaking the white illusion the bed sheets provided.
"Yeah yeah, I'm awake. But how long are we going to be?" I asked impatiently. I had an essay I needed to write for tomorrow and it wasn't going to write it's self.
"Dont be such a spoil sport Smith! We haven't even done what we came here for, you know?" Responded Eric, throwing off the sheet.
"You can call me Mark you know..." I mumbled in vain as Eric led me off the leafy path and down past several rows of trees that had fallen over, laying dead like colossal beasts. They had no leaves, and the ones standing drooped over like they were old and had back pains.
I, however, was beginning to feel a mix of boredom, anxiety, curiosity, annoyance, and fear as Eric led me further away from the path and down several slopes. After a while all the scenery looked the same, I wasn't sure of the way back, and the comforting moonlight became obscured by the dense clusters of dead trees and high rising slopes on all sides. Eric appeared to be leading me down into some sort of crater, I swore to myself that if this was an alien UFO I would eat my thumbs and walk briskly away at this ludicrously.
Eric appeared to read my thoughts.
"Nearly there, Smith. Trust me, this is going to be awesome." Said Eric.
I nodded and subsequently zoned out as we walked through dense clusters of nothing interesting before finally arriving at a clearing, the middle of which containing a rock formation.
Eric ran up to it, throwing his sheet up into the air.
"Found it!" He said enthusiastically as he began pushing on a bolder.
I sat there, staring unimpressed at the dull rock.
"Smith? Help much?" Exclaimed Eric as he struggled.
Sighing loudly to showcase my utter distaste and reluctance, I pushed on the bolder with Eric. Low and behold, a cave entrance was revealed as we pushed the bolder aside.
Eric dashed gleefully inside the overwhelming darkness, and I followed. I brought out my phone and used it as a light source, preemptively apparently, as after turning a corner in this cave system Eric had already lit a candle, revealing what looked like a living space.
"Check out this junk man!" Said Eric, bouncing around the room.
"Look, there's a carpet, a bed, a radio, a TV, an armchair... a shelve full of books!" He continued as he jumped around the dimly lit and damp area.
"So, what, you want to use this place as some sort of retreat?" I said, voice laced with undeniable skepticism.
Eric nodded enthusiastically.
"Duh!" Responded Eric.
"I... dont think thats a good idea..." I said as I sat down in the armchair. This place was definitely maintained, and used. It was somebody's home. A very alive somebody.
"How did you find out about this place?" I asked accusatively.
"Oh, I was wondering around when I found it... the rock outside wasn't quite covering the entrance, and I saw some light coming from it, I couldn't budge the rock so I figured I'd get you to help me move it, Smith." Eric explained.
I sat there not entirely believing what I had just heard.
"Are you an idiot! Eric, dude, someone lives here!" I yelled, now very scared.
"I dont see anyone here, surely he would be a hermit if he lived here, never going out, and I dont see anyone." Said Eric in a calming voice.
Agitated, I decided to walk back through the darkness to leave the rock. Eric called back for me.
"Hey, dont be such a wet blanket!"
I sat outside against the rock formation. Instead of persuade Eric, I had learnt that, after the many, many years I had met him, that he will never be persuaded by anyone about anything. The best thing to do will wait for him to get bored, it's as true now as an eighteen year old it was when he was merely five.
I yawned as I stared up at the moon. My vision blurred slightly and I yawned, I tried to think about not sleepy things, because I had an essay to write... but unfortunately, I was already lost to the world. I was unable to hear Eric's cries for help, or remember the grizzled old man who must have stood over me as I slept against the rock. I must have missed one of the biggest regrets of my life, but most intriguing of all... what I may have missed was the beginning of something much more tragic and unbelievable than a simple murder.
