If anyone cares as to why:

1.) Ayumu - I used a picture of him as my 'online persona' for years, before finding out he was an anime character. It turns out he's pretty much my ideal character, to put it simply. I also love Hiyono from the anime, and other characters.
2.) Dante - Besides being a real bad-a and funny in the games, the anime shows he's a really caring person, and helps others through their struggles. The guy wouldn't hurt a fly if it's not a demon. Just awesome, calm, caring, witty, and extremely proficient, and has a pretty sad past.
3.) Train - An awesome character. Went from a dark past, anti-hero, to a really cheerful guy fighting for justice without killing. Also looks a bit like Ayumu.
4.) Yosuke Hanamura - A real bro. He's funny, cheery, and supporting. He also looks awesome, especially with the headphones. You know, the guy that always lightens the mood and can be awesome when serious.
5.) Shu - Well... Character development, and pretty relatable. From unconfident to true king.
6.) Joey Wheeler - Look at #4. Awesome accent, and 'challenger' attitude/personality. Funny and confident.
7.) Gainer - He's a video gamer, and stumbles across a mech. Instead of going through 'I can't pilot this' and 'I don't want to pilot this again!' afterwards, he pilots the mech willingly, and fights to be able to pilot again after. Also takes time to play video games throughout the anime.
8.) Kazuki - Also looks a bit like Ayumu/Train. His personality is like a more shonen Goku. Fighting spirit!
9.) Kamina - Kamina.
10.) Renton - Despite some annoyances and childishness, he ends up a pretty cool character.

P.S. Yes, most of these have brown hair.

My explanations on my list

1.He is awesome in his SSJ2 form. He looks awesome, and is the strongest Saiyan at the time.
2.I still, after all this time find Videl kind of really attractive and she is pretty cool too.
3.The Contractor of wind. His personality is great, with awesome backstory and ablities. He is as strong as his father, which is the strongest fire user in the kannagi clan.
4.Awesomely skilled and funny. He even looks kinda cool. He is actually way cooler than I thought he would be when I first started the series. He even looks cool, to me anyways.
5.This is self explanatory. I like the way his scythe looks, also the fact that he can fuse the iron with his blood, I love his look and his white hair as well.
6.I love fire. This continues on to my love of the plume plume fruit. Plus Ace is awesome in how much he helps his brother and cares for him. It literally made me cry a little when he died protecting his brother.
7.An assassin that is only ten years old. His nen ability is to use electricity. He is very skilled, from his assassin training, and he is also very perceptive. His darker personality at points is what is also cool about him. It is also pretty awesome that he has white hair. Im a sucker for white hair.
8.I fall for her every time I watch this anime. I love her personality and willingness to help her comrades. I am also a fan of Kallen lelouch
9.A sword wielding slut? This is pretty much true since she gets off on killing zombies, but still, she addds a serious element(more than the post apocalyptic atmosphere along with zombies), in how she seems to be very influential in their group. She is the only one that uses a sword, which is pretty awesome.
10.I am becoming an Asuna fan. I also think that it is awesome how Kirito is known as the black knight(not a batman referance) and wears all black WITH a black sword. I think that Asuna is great because she is what keeps him on the right path at times, since I fear that without her, he would be less determined.

10) Yu Narukami (persona 4)
Yu is essentially pretty badass... and pretty funny, the shoutouts to options you could pick in game in the anime are really nice little features. Not to mention he gets some ok development in the anime, he looks badass, is a pimp, and is incredibly powerful. Looses points for being a blank slate mostly.

9) Rintaro Okabe (Steins;Gate)
Incredibly boastful loudmouth, was able to invent a time machine and what he has to endure during the show is simply heartbreaking and he became a character I really sympathised for.

8) Simon (Gurren Lagann)
It was either him or Kamina. Kamina is awesome but I prefer Simon because he gets more development.

7) Yuno Gasai (Future Diary)
Craziest girl ever. I dont think I've ever seen a character more psychotic, but she was pretty sweet and attractive... I still wouldn't want to be anywhere near her if she was real. I dont fancy the idea of my intestines being spread around the earth if I'm not her love interest, and if she is yandering over me, then I'm either dead or doomed to a life with no free time...

6) Father (FMA:B)
A creature born of a humans desire for knowledge and perfection and how it nearly devoured the world... simply fantastic villan.

5) Maka Albarn (Soul Eater)
I LOVE YOU MAKA. Sort of. You helped me through a lot of subconscious problems I was having surrounding my grandfathers death and puberty suddenly taking a hold of me for the most depressing period of my life... obsessing over her for a few months distracted me from an even more depressing fate... really close to my heart. But I have to be professional I guess...

4) Light Yagami (Death note)
Perfect example of a villan protagonist done right, and also of how power corrupts perfectly good people. He's smart, inventive, and totally insane. Shine on light.

3) Shu Ouma (Guilty crown)
Like many of the self hating anime characters out there, I relate to Shu ouma quite well although in retrospect his actions are what I think I would do... still fantastic in the end and he dresses like a total boss later on in the series.

2) Lelouch Lamprouge (Code Geass)
Like Light, he's pretty insane- but he's got more motivation than 'I hate this bloody world' although he still has that, but essentially the ending to code geass really makes this guy a true hero.

1) Takumi Nishijō (Chaos;Head)
What a massive slap in the face this guy was... I have no idea how long he will remain my favorite character, but I essentially see him as a manifestation and ultimate resolution of all my paranoia, everything bad about myself times by ten. Hating myself, liking anime and games an unhealthy amount, alienating myself and others around me, other things and of course weather life is worth living considering the world isn't real- and finally the resolution of those problems. Definitely my favorite for now but even if he changes, he'll still be high and shouldn't change TOO soon.

It's going to take me a while to think of a proper list but for now here are 10 characters that I really like that come to mind.

4. Gauron (Full Metal Panic!)
5. Kaname (Full Metal Panic!)
6. Setsuna (Gundam 00)

9. Viral (Gurren Lagann)
10. Garrod Ran (After War: Gundam X).

In my final list I plan to only have one character per anime in it. I am not sure if I should put anime adaptation characters as well. I haven't watched a lot of anime recently so it might take me a while to figure it out.

Setsuna but no Sousuke, yet two other characters from Full Metal Panic? I mean, there's some good choices in your list, but I thought Setsuna and Sousuke were pretty similar, except the latter seemed to me to have more character and development. They both have very similar backgrounds and close personalities, though. Both of them are even 'mech maniacs,' though that doesn't get played on much on FMP besides a few scenes.

Well, right now, if I were to rework my list, Sousuke would be my top favorite, so I may just be biased, but I just find it weird you don't have him on your list while having Setsuna and other FMP characters on it.

Also, Garrod is my favorite Gundam protagonist after Asemu. Super pilots ftw. Screw newtype hax.

Well, like I said this list isn't complete and I'm only at about episode 8 of the anime so I haven't had a chance to see much of Sosuke's character development yet. I put Kaname on the list because she is a tsundere I can actually tolerate and enjoy, and Gauron because I like batshit insane villains. From what I've heard of Sosuke though, it does seem like I'll put him on my list once I am done with the anime(s).

Is Asemu from AGE? I haven't seen AGE yet so I don't really know the characters in it.

Yep, Asemu's the 2nd arc's/generation's protagonist. Don't wanna say much, but he was just really cool and competent, and his arc was really good despite some cliches.

As for Kaname, I also think she was a great character, I'd say my favorite female anime character. Sure, she's a 'tsundere,' but she has so much more to her character as it goes on. And Gauron, I think he was an amazing villain. Even though there's really not much to him than insane and evil, something about him is just so... Creepy and insane. Like you know this guy seriously enjoys causing terror and wouldn't hesitate to pull a trigger on anyone, and plus his 'relationship' to Sousuke is so... Well, you'll find more about that later on. But even down to his last appearance (which was very unorthodox), he would send chills down my spine knowing something horrible was going to happen and he was going to enjoy it.

I really think Full Metal Panic! is the best anime I've watched... Even if Steins;Gate was amazing with its chaotic time traveling story, and Guilty Crown with its music, visuals, and story of a boy becoming a true king who lost everything, Gurren Lagann with a very early yet extremely impactful death and themes of never giving up against destiny... I think Full Metal Panic! just takes it all home with just its characters, despite the very typical story and world it's set in. And the Fumoffu season is the funniest and most entertaining comedy I've ever watched.

Well, I kinda just went off topic... But I'll just add, my favorite character from Gundam 00 was Allelujah.

I... should watch fullmetal panic. I'm a story over character guy, but if the characters are apparently just that good perhaps it will transcend my preferences.

As for favorite anime characters, a recent addition would be my favorite character from Dangan Ronpa (A game soon to become an anime) Spoilers ahead for the end of the first Dangan Ronpa:
