These three appear to be visual novels released a few short years ago on the Xbox 360 adapted into animes. Steins;Gate, an anime I though was incredibly excellent, was only the second anime and Robotics;Notes doesn't actually have it's adaption yet. The anime comes out in a month or two and I am looking forward to it. The novels (and animes) were released in the order they were in the title of this thread.
So Chaos;Head. Mmm... it's the first in the same alternate japan universe continuity as Steins;Gate and I didn't hear about it until I looked up Robotics;Notes on wikipedia after seeing a release schedule also happening to include the upcoming Blazblue OVA (see how these things are connected? I love the internet) and found out about this trilogy.
How come everyone talks about Steins;Gate but not Chaos;Head? After skimming through the brief wikipedia article about Chaos;Head, I jumped into the first episode.
Loving that opening.
Chaos;head is about a highschool student named Taku, a completely obsessive Otaku living in Tokyo 2008. He has no interest in the '3D world' as he calls it and prefers to play games and MMOS on his computer and watch anime. He even created a minimum attendance chart so he can go to as few classes as possible. He suffers from delusions, a girl from one of his favorite anime hangs over his shoulders while playing games and tells him to keep clicking the buttons, convincing him that his way of life is what suits him, driving him away from reality... he reacts coldly to everyone and of course the anime girl named Seria is just a delusion. When these delusions become serious, he starts complaining to his delusion that he's suffering from delusions and his delusion tells him that he should ignore the delusions and continue playing games in complete darkness, all the while telling himself that he should just ignore reality.
Yes, this is THAT sort of anime and it quickly progresses into deeper stuff, becoming a mystery anime that hooked me right from the first episode. I love it.
So why have I never heard of it?
Well would you believe that most people consider this anime pretty terrible? I'm only on episode 5, and unfortunately one of the reviews I read immediately after the first episode spoils one of the major plot twists, seemingly claiming that Chaos; Head is so bad that spoiling this twist would be doing me a favour, as in, I wouldn't feel inclined to watch it.
I'm on episode 5 (12 episode anime by the way) and despite knowledge of this plot twist I STILL have no idea whats going to happen next (in a good way).
Try it out, seriously, I may just be feeling defiant of those telling me that this is bad but the show even seems to be a breakdown of hallucinations and the serious Otaku mindset broken up by an over reaching mystery that just seems really cool.
Big problems with it seems that mystery's get burried and forgotten under new mysteries until the twist halfway, I think Taku goes on and on about each one so you cant forget them, really.
Then of course he starts developing a harem, typical Japan, although unlike most harem anime where the girls will fight over a bland protagionist the story seems to be that every girl terrifies Taku to the point where he thinks most of them are going to try and kill him, the only one he chooses to believe being Seria, his delusion, who only seems interested in keeping him in the dark and playing games. The girls dont fight over him either, he just meets them at separate points in time and they never interact directly so theres none of that terrible 'it was a misunderstanding!' humour that I typically hate about the harem genre. The only Ecchi (which barely counts) comes in the form of Taku's obvious delusions and they are RELEVANT. He frequently has them and the atmosphere keeps me on the edge of my seat... metaphorically in reality I'm slumped in it... but yeah.
Who knows, maybe I'm speaking too soon.
Steins;Gate is time travel. A young man living in tokyo at a later date than Chaos;Head manages to accidentally modify his time machine to send text messages to the past. I have watched all of Steins;Gate it's fantastic in fact my review is here on this site.
Looks like both animes have a smilier style of opening music (same band?)
As for Robotics;Notes I have no idea, I didn't pay attention the the synopsis I read. But it's in the same series as these to, and apparently the visual novel was good so thats all I can ask for really. It was something about fighting games, highschools, and motion capture technology. And people commentating that the visual novel on the Xbox was really good.
When I've finished Chaos;Head I'd love for someone to go through it and tell me why it's so atrocious because I think I may have been exposed to it in the wrong way, ie I am predisposed towards liking it. I already know that Stein's gate is the bee's bollox in my book so just take my word for it on that one and we'll say no more of it.
And now, my hype for Robotics;Notes begins.
