Eleanor was staring fearfully at what had just happened. She was beginning to understand all too well what this 'paradise' was built on, and she was beginning to question whether or not she wanted to be a part of it. Skyla, Riku, and Rinna, who had seen this also, were extremely shocked.
"So, that's why Death allows there to be a paradise"Riku said with a laugh"I guess we need to keep reaping"He smiles a little twisted and walks away.
Shirley upon seeing this dashed up to the castle.
"Whats going on?" She demanded.
"Oh, nothing much." Said Charles.
"She was talking to me. And she deserves to know all about it now.
But first, lets show you to your new home, your entitled to one after your first reaping. AI, get the others in her situation here too." Said Davis.
"Yes." Replied AI, going to get Skyla, Riku, Rina, and Eleanor.
They all appeared at an estate of houses, one for each of them.
Davis looked grim, and he was alone.
"I truly care for the people in Bliss. I truly want to make a great society. You dont have to believe those words. I'm not so arrogant as to believe my methods are perfect."
He turned around, and looked over Bliss from the hill the houses were on.
"Sprits die, come here, receive a final dose of happiness... and then sometimes, death wakes up, and demands that a spirit be sacrificed to him. We live inside death- the eye of the storm. Us being here is like placing a jar of cookies right in front of a child. Death is death. We cant ask him to stop killing.
The higher the level, the more 'tasty' death finds the spirit, and the longer he will be satisfied before we need to sacrifice spirits.
Level 0s are unacceptable to him. They're like slop. And he... only lets Bliss continue because of me. At least, thats what I thought before he became so gluttonous. The spirits he eats effects his demeanor, and by trying to stay here in Bliss and give him more human traits. The darker human traits. Now, we're only here to make sure death never runs out of things to eat... its despicable." Davis began crying, but he made sure no one could see him. Eleanor didn't have to see the tears. She knew the sound of suppressed crying. She went to Davis to try to comfort him.
Riku had been standing in the corner, his fists clenched. As Eleanor went to comfort the man who had built such a twisted society, he let out a few words. "How pitiful"
Rina then tried to hit him on the head, but he was serious this time.
"How pitiful it is that you have to submit to an entity like that. Why not overtake it using strategy? Why not capture it through various strategies? As this place is now, it is hopeless to try to survive"Riku says as he looks down on Davis, eyes burning with rage.
Davis looked sad and shrank beneath Riku's glare.
"Death is death. I dont think we'd exactly be able to kill en entity like that, or 'trap' him from the inside... we can only prolong the inevitable." He said. He looked at Elanor and smiled. Skyla had been standing a ways off in deep thought.
"Thanks... your a sweetheart, you know that? With our levels, we could easily sustain Bliss for years... but that wont happen. I wont let you go." He said, clutching her hand.
Shirley was angry.
"Shouldn't we find some way to make sure Bliss sustains it's self?" She yelled, looking around for support.
"If you can come up with a good plan, I'm all ears.
I designed it so that those who work the hardest get to live in Bliss. Is that so wrong?" Asked Davis sadly.
"... Ok. I suppose we'll have to reap. Davis, you've done your best. But I haven't given up. I'm not simply going to sit around in Bliss drinking milkshakes, reading books, watching films, and fending off Skyla's advances- I'm going to end the war, and find some other way to compromise with death. And I will do everything in my power to make sure no level 0's have to suffer the fate of loosing an afterlife. I will become a paternal reaper, and I will beat death. Someway, I will make Bliss the perfect society you envisioned it to be, Davis, and I have eternity to make everyone as happy as possible!" She vowed, with fierce determination in her eyes.
Davis turned around.
"Heh, not worried about self preservation. Now thats the sort of attitude I'd expect from a level 5. Maybe when your done, you will be." Davis chuckled.
Eleanor looked up towards where the Gates of Death were. "I think we have a chance to make this place true Bliss. But if we're to do this, we'd best start at the beginning. If this place is within Death's realm, why did he allow its creation? He must have had his reasons, and whatever they are is something we can use against him."
"Ok, I'll tell you. Step inside, I'll tell you in front of a fire. Its always chilly after a sacrifice. It may be my guilt, but apparently everyone feels it." Davis said, shaking his head playfully at Skyla and heading inside.
Davis sat down in an armchair and looked at the flickering flames.
"This is the story... of how I befriended death." He began, he coughed and began speaking.
"1940 World War II. I was a low ranking private in the British amy, living in the trenches, fighting the Germans.
Out of everyone there I was the most cheerful and upbeat. Even in the face of certain doom I'd crack a joke, and I'd make my brothers in arms laugh despite everything. I was the only one who didn't complain about conditions, and even when I got wounded I'd hide it and fix myself up. I was the happiest person in world war II, according to AI's database, and I was loved by all.
Then, just like that, I was sent over the top.
Almost immediately I stepped on a mine, and BOOM, my life was over.
Not quite.
I was saved by Death himself.
Instead of carrying out his normal duties, he carried me off to a cave.
Death in those days was very different to what he is now. He was dark, philosophical, great to talk to. Death was a kind guy. He saved me because I was the first person he'd seen who was so happy.
Death, however, was unhappy. During the war, waves upon waves of level 0's would die, and he was the one who had to pick them up, and consume them, they tasted bad, but it was his duty, and didn't mind that. No, what really got him is that their Bliss level gets added to his own.
Thousands of good men. Thousands of depressed men. He carried all of their infinite sorrow, and they wouldn't stop dying. Death had to burden their sadness, deepening all the time.
Death told me this, and I couldn't even begin to comprehend the sadness he felt. He told me that he was just an avatar, and his body existed as an endless mass swirling in infinite space.
Then he told me about spirits.
I had an idea as he nursed me to health, to preserve my happiness and what I spread to others.
I imagined Bliss.
I told him, what if I could gather the dead together, make them happy, keep them there for death's comfort. Then the imortal dead would descend upon the planet, and end suffering and hatred, so that there would only be happiness for death to burden.
At the time, death didn't see the idea of Bliss as a giant cookie jar. He and I saw it as a place for people like me, his only friend, to be happy, socialise with him and have fun, and bring more people so that those he killed would make him feel better.
He cleared some land in his void, and I built Bliss right there with my own mind when I eventually died. I died designing Bliss, but the documents were burned at the end of the war... regardless, I died soon, I committed suicide to be closer to death- that act brought me up to level 5, accepting him with welcome arms on top of everything else.
So, I made Bliss, and brought people in. Eventually, we realised that death couldn't NOT kill, so we decide that only people we 'reapers' killed would be brought to death, everyone else death handled. Furthermore, we built the gates of death for anyone wishing to end eternity. And thats that, we ended the war by bringing hitler to the peak of victory, killing him much earlier than the official records say, and letting the war end in due course. Hitler was quick to pass through, luckily.
And, well, that explains why death agreed to Bliss and why we reap the way we do.
But of course, several years ago, death changed.
Bliss affects death in unpredictable ways. Death always used to visit me in the castle, and we'd play chess and discussed philosophy and world affairs. I cracked jokes and death would laugh... then he began seeing me less and less.
The bliss of humans began to make death drunk, odd, different. He carried the happiness of many, many people, but rather than making death benevolent, it made him act more, 'sinful' the bibels definition of major sins. He became more human, yet less detached. The way Bliss effects him is that it makes him feel better, but it warps his mind and makes him gluttonous, selfish, detached, and lustful, even. All of it. The only way I can see is brining about balance, but death refuses to eat level 0s now. He stuffs them in a cage until they're good to eat, which never happens. Call that place hell. I'm sorry I lied to you about that. I'm a fan of not letting people know the whole truth to keep them happy...
Anyway, now he keeps Bliss around not for company, for me, for anyone, he keeps it around because we produce more Blissful people.
At this rate however, he'll be eating his way through Bliss faster than we can reap. If we can end the war, there will be a huge wave of Bliss like there was at the end of world war 1 and 2.
However, the effects of Bliss may be irreversible on him after that, but you know, just a theory.
Ok, I think that should answer everything, but there is so much to tell that I may have missed something out." He finished.
"How would we end this war?"Rina asked
"Good question. I've been far to busy with new recruits and the management of Bliss to really worry about the war. I've only now began to think about it." Replied Davis.
"Surely we just need the side that seems to be in the right and most repressed in the public eye to win quickly and with grace?" Shirley suggested.
"Sounds good." Said Davis.
"I think there's a more serious issue here. Death hungers for joy, but that joy warps him. Somehow we need Death to see himself for what he's become from the perspective of what he once was. Hmm..." Eleanor walked off, lost in thought.
"I doubt that will happen. We cant turn back the clock." Said Davis.
"Ok, I need some sleep. I'll see you guys later" Said Davis, as he walked out of the door and left. He left notes on the houses so everyone knew whose house was whos. The house they were in now was Shirley's.
"I agree, I want sleep, even as a spirit. Night." She said as she headed upstairs.
Everyone went home, lost in their thoughts.
"So, that's why Death allows there to be a paradise"Riku said with a laugh"I guess we need to keep reaping"He smiles a little twisted and walks away.
