So I'm working on a song for a MLP music contest and I need your thoughts. You could give me your general thoughts about it, first impressions, what you liked and disliked about the track, melody, mixing/volume, general feel of the song, etc. *nom* I've listened to this song so many times while composing it that I'm not sure if what's in my head is coming out right in the program. Opinions from fresh ears are well-needed and welcomed at this point. *nom* Also, one of the rules for the contest, since it is a contest about My Little Pony after all, is that it has to be pony-related. But since my track isn't a remix of the show's songs nor does it reference the show at any point, it's not immediately obvious that it's MLP-related. It even might not be considered pony enough... *nom* ...if it doesn't have a pony name. (Hooray for loopholes!) ;D That's where y'all can help. I suck at names. My working title for this song was literally "Some orch thing". I need your help to come up with a good, yet pony-related name. Simple enough. *nom* If it helps, I was going for something like a "fusion of Octavia and DJ Pon3" style track (like that hasn't been done enough already >.>) but you might have something else in mind when you listen to it. Tell me. *nom* Anyways, THE SONG IS HERE soundcloud.com/njayhuang/some-orch-thing-wipSorry, I eated the cookies while writing the post. OTL

Before anything, what software did you use to make this?
As for feedback, did you have anything specific in mind in relation to ponies when making this? If not, it could be like an alternate nightmare moon theme song. "Dark side of the moon" or "The clap of hooves resonating through darkness" springs immediately to mind. "The underside of the hoof?" "Friendship is a nuisance?" "Friendship is pointless?" It as a very negative feel. The music it's self is good. You could always stick an echo of one of your favorite themes from the show like the 'myyyyy little ponies..." From the main theme.
Just throwing out ideas.

I used Linux Multimedia Studio. I didn't want to pirate FL, Logic, or Cubase etc. so I went with freeware. The only thing that kind of bugs me is that the undo function doesn't work and it crashes sometimes when I open a vst, but I work around that. Nothing pony-specific in mind beyond just the general idea of Octavia and Scratch coming together to make a song. I know Aspect of the Storm's Scratching Harmony was based on the same idea, but the tracks are so different that they're not even similar. I never thought about it as a Nightmare Moon theme, but I think it could work. It does have a sort of dark/depressing feel to it now that I listen to it with that in mind. An orchestral song with the MLP theme motif was already done by Makkon in Deae Luna, (it's actually the only Makkon song I know besides his remix of For the NLR. ) so I wouldn't want it to seem like I'm copying his work (I'm not by the way ). Thanks for the feedback guys!

I don't mean to bump an old thread, but if you want to use FL Studio for free, you can download the trial. The trial is basically the full version, except when you save your file it gets locked until you buy FL Studio. You can even export your files before you save, so you'd effectively be using it for free. Also, you don't have all of the instruments, you still have to pay for those, but there's already guitar, bass, drums, strings, and piano, along with synths, so it's not too bad.
The downside is well, you can't save until you've finished it, and you can't shut down your computer until you're done. There's also worrying about power outages, but if you have a laptop you can have a back up plan.
I've made a few tracks like that (and it's pretty easy to use too), but I'm not all that cut out for composing lol. Your track was great though! Nice build up ;D
