Linux?

I have 50+ GB of hard drive space and hate Windows 7 (stupid svchost keeps going over 500,000 intermittently again ). Therefore, I intend to get Linux. Problem is, there are, like, 5,872 different distros and I barely have any idea what a distro is to begin with. Needless to say, if anyone knows anything about Linux, its distros, etc. and could help me figure out what to download, that'd be awesome.

All I know is that a friend of mine is obsessed with the linux operating system and is always persuading me to get it. Even through I'm pretty sure its not available for macs. I'll ask her tomorrow if you want.

That'd be great. I'm pretty sure it'll be helpful to know that I intend to use it for emulation, iPod file management, and watching videos in VLC, since I think the distros are specialized for specific kinds of users, so... yeah.
Also, since Linux (or, rather, the distros?) is an operating system, it should work on any computer provided its internal architecture (i.e. 32- or 64-bit CPU) is correct, regardless of what OS is already there... I think?

Whenever you remember to do it will be fine. I may, perhaps, be able to get some tech support on this matter myself by the end of the week, though. Maybe.

So, I asked her today. After a short an incomprehensible rant about macs being crap that I didn't listen to, I picked out something along the lines of 'Fedora' so I'd look that up.

I also got some tech support at school (for a rather hefty price, perhaps. More on that when I'm not taking online class finals), so I'll also have to try Ubuntu at some point. By the way, have you told your friend about how there are no viruses for Macs? (If you do, she'll probably respond with "Because nobody cares enough about Macs to write viruses for them" or something along those lines.)

Yeah, thats one reason why I love macs but I tend to ignore her rants, incredibly dull, incomprehensible, and while well thought out very narrow sighted. I tell her I dont care and she responds: "YOU DO! Because your inferior!" Yeah, whatever, keep believing that. Anyway, I hope I was helpful.

I'd probably get the gist of one of those rants, myself, if they have anything to do with the technology itself.
Anyway, I won't know just how helpful this has been until I try it, which will take a while, as I'm quite busy at the moment... I'll provide an update when I finally can get around to trying it.

I apologize for bringing up what may be a dead topic, but I can't resist the urge to help someone who may need some help I used Linux heavily AT one point in time. My cousin IS better at it than I was, but I'm in constant contact with him ALSO Linux works on ANY computer OS doesn't affect it... as far as I know but my cousin has a triple boot computer on all 3 OS. I can help with any questions, and If I can't I can get my cousin to help me work it out. I personally liked linux and it was nice It made my 12 year old Desktop -what I am on currently- run like a dream If you have 50gb of HD space I'd recommend Xubuntu OR Kubuntu I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND Removing Windows 7 however!!! I'd do a dual boot and partition HD space for Linux Linux takes a bit of work to get running. Of course I haven't used it in a year due to my Great computer catastrophe....but I'd like to help as much as I can and I ran out of space on my 15 year old HD -only 30gb of space- so I don't currently have the means to re-use it. I apologize again for this dead topic renewal though :S side note: there are less viruses for linux than macs ;D and it's easier to fight linux viruses. I don't know how though :C

Yep, old thread; by now I'm already a dedicated Ubuntu user and at some point in the process wound up replacing Windows 7 with XP for some reason. Thanks for the info, though.
