They landed at the school, which was deserted. The angel of death was high above the cloud where no one could see it.
"All right. For scouting, you can leave the reaper frame and go ahead, they cant see you in this form. However, spirits look normal to other spirits." Charles explained, getting out of the suit.
"Lets leave these inside the school, then go and have a look at whats going on." He said.
They all followed him to... a mass funeral.
Pictures of all the students and staff who were killed her hung up on a makeshift wall, covered in flowers. Shirley, Skyla, and Riku and Rina's photos were among the many.
Parents and friends alike were up there, making eulogies.
"... Next Mr and Miss Barnes would like to have a few words." Said the preist.
Shirley's parents walked up to the stage, wearing black. They stood under Shirley's photo.
"Shirley... she was... she..." Began her mother, but couldn't continue.
"She was a ray of sunshine to us, and everyone around her. She made everyone happy, and broke many hearts but never hated anyone."
James in the audience looked down, rubbing his cheek and crying.
"She was intelligent, beautiful, wonderful to all. I remember how she'd always come home and tell us all about her day, she'd often bring home wonderful friends... she'd never create noise, never argue, we never needed to tell her to do anything. To us, she was the perfect daughter." Finished her father.
"I- I remember... that the la- last thing I ever said to her... I scolded her for spilling milk then she dashed off... to think this- this happened on her... on everyone's last day of the school year... and I, I scolded her! Why couldn't she have died near me! In my arms! At the very least! I could have told her, like I have so many times, that I loved her, but she died, she died... after something so sour." Her mother burst into tears.
"No no, its ok, I was away on work that day. She loved you to the end... she loved all of us... yet on her last day, I wasn't even there to see her smiling face... I'm sorry, me and my wife have to get going..." They went and sat down, and the audience were silently crying.
Shirley herself, watching, was crying silently, not that it mattered, the people she loved so dearly were unable to see her when she was so close.
"I'm sorry Shirley, this stuff happens. Your parents are wonderful people, however..." He showed them their aura.
"They are level 0. Unsurprising, really. Everyone here is level 0. We should probably leave this place be and have another look around..." Said Charles.
Skyla was also weeping.
"Oh, so sad... comfort me!" She wailed, diving into Shirley's arms. Shirley let her drop to the ground.
Riku and Rina's parents came to the stage and began a speech.
"Lets get out of here..." Mumbled Riku. Rina nodded in agreement and followed. Rina saw some of her old friends crying, and couldn't hold it in anymore.
Some soldiors arrive, disembarking from the transport, ready to move. The troop commander speaks.
"Okay everyone, let's go! Investigate the events, and be ready for further such attacks. Find out all you can and fortify positions. We're here to help everyone here."
"SIR, YES SIR!" the troops chorus, then begin to their various duties.
The commander turns. "Eleanor-"
"I'll find out if there's anyone who was wounded, and if not, aid the chaplain in comforting the bereaved, once I finish setting up the field medical encampment." She begins looking for wounded, and looking for a good place to start up the medical encampment.
The unit commander shakes his head with a rueful sigh. "I'm glad they assigned you to us, Eleanor," he says to himself. He stretched then attended to his own duties, taking care of his unit.
Charles saw the military arrive. He didn't see Eleanor at first.
"Better avoid them, they breed negativity." He said, herding the new recruits into the town centre.
"Ok, these guys are nice. A couple around here will do. Main spots are the church, town hall, the shopping district, and the big family living in the large estate. Lets get back to the frames." Said Charles, as they moved back.
"Ok, I'll take the church, you guys go everywhere else. I'll make it a competition to see who can reap the most people." Said Charles, getting in the frame and heading off.
He arrived at the church. They were in prayer.
"Poor suckers. They dont even know whats beyond death yet they dedicate their lives to a deity? Oh well, what do I care..." He said as he began slaughtering them one by one.
Skyla headed towards the estate. There was a rich family living in the house, metaphorically drowning in their wealth.
"Well, if I must." Said Skyla as she shot the father, as he collapsed the children gathered around him and began crying. One reckless biy attacked Skyla.
"..." Skyla smacked her sword into the boys head, and continued her job.
Riku and Rina headed to the town hall, where a meeting was taking place.
"Woot! Slaaaaaaughter! Yelled Riku as he dashed through them with his scythe. Rina followed and finished off his remnants.
Shirley decided to head to the shopping district, staying in the shadows and avoiding the funeral.
She saw a few level 1s and 2s.
"Ok... Lets see what this can do." She mumbled. She flicked her sword open and dashed into the town square, causing a ruckus.
"Ahh! I knew they weren't finished with this town yet!" A woman screamed.
Shirley sliced through several level 1s, her sword going straight through their necks, but not decapitating them.
She continued to kill until the level 0s had fled and the district was deserted. She collapsed to the floor, and began sobbing silently.
Death avatar popped into existence.
He sat looking at her for a while, his face concealed under his hood. Then he turned away and began slowly collecting souls.
"So... death. How are you?" She asked, trying to break the silence.
Death looked at her curiously. He then turned back to what he was doing, putting the souls in caskets.
"Life- death going good for you?" Asked Shirley again.
Death finished and put the souls into a large casket, and handed it to Shirley. He held on for a little while.
Charles came around.
"Your sticking around longer than normal. You remember Shirley, right?" Said Charles, coming around the corner holding a large casket.
Death's hand darted back like he had just been burned, and left.
"Come on. We should get going." Said Charles, leading her away.
Suddenly, there was a shout.
"All right men, open fire!" Yelled the officer, pointing at Shirley. The men opened fire at Shirley as he back was turned.
She turned around, slowly and in no rush as the bullets bounced off her armour.
"Charles, they're opening fire on us." She mumbled, terrified despite her invulnerability.
"Forget about them. Look at her..." Said Charles, actually drooling.
Shirley looked over at Eleanor.
"Level 5? You said they were rare!" Yelled Shirley.
"Yes. Oh my yes! The second in existence. Oh my. I really must be the one to kill her... oh yes..." Charles licked his lips and threw Shirley to the floor with a thud, then dashed over to Eleanor.
Charles decided to savour the kill. He grabbed Eleanor's hand and felt it's warmth, the warmth of a shining spirit.
"Oh my... you are... perfect. To think I..." Charles couldn't help himself, he embraced Eleanor and began licking her neck, taking off his helmet. To everyone around them, a headless man was now hugging their medic and Eleanor couldn't feel Charles outside the suit.
Eleanor couldn't resist, she began coughing up blood on Charles, and above his shoulder the death Avatar was closing in.
"He's disgusting... are level 5s really so...?" Began Shirley, trailing off and turning away.
"Huh? Hes headless? And he's hugging Eleanor?" Said the officer. He began blubbering, unable to do anything in confusion as another soldior, who had been a footballer before enlisting, charged into Charles.
"GET YOUR INVISIBLE MITTS OF HER BASTARD!" He yelled, tackling him to the ground. Eleanor stepped back, too dumbfounded and in pain to do anything.
The layers encircled Charles and Elanor, and opened fire at Shirley. Shirley kept them occupied as Skyla ran up from behind, jumped over the circle and span in the air, shooting Eleanor several times. She landed next to Shirley.
Eleanor looked up at the sky, her breathing labored and a ringing in her ears. She could barely hear the soldiors as they gathered around her. Eleanor, feeling content with her life, collapsed in a final coughing fit, her vision blurring and her end pushed his way through the soldiors without them knowing.
"Get a medic, quick!" Yelled the commanding officer.
His subordinate looked grim.
"... She was our medic." He replied.
"No, no, dont die on me, not like this!" He was about to sob when he remembered who had killed her.
"YOU BASTARDS!" He yelled, getting up and firing an RPG into the three reapers.
Charles threw off the man on top of him and caught the shell, letting it explode in his hands. He crushed it, and activated the sleeping gas.
"Phew, in the nick of time. She was about to die there. She must have have been mortally ill." Muttered Charles.
He turned to Eleanor to see death skulking away with her.
"Stop right there, death." He said. Death froze. Then slowly continued walking.
"Nuh uh, dont be like that. Now hand her over. Come on, death."
Death slumped and chucked her spirit over to Charles, who then stuck here in a casket. Death folded his arms and left in a sulk.
"All right, gather up your caskets girls, its time to leave." Said Charles.
Riku and Rina came running around the corner with their caskets.
They reached the Angel of death, scrambling on board the deck.
"Ok, everything is in order. Place the caskets in that tube, AI will take care of the rest." The new reapers did as they were told, and the caskets got sucked up into the holes as they were placed in. Charles activated the mind wipe. To the world, this would appear to be another terrorist attack.
Meanwhile the soldiers uninjured carried Eleanor's body back to the main camp, where before long there was not a dry eye to be seen. It wasn't until her eulogy that someone would bring up how she dedicated her life to making others happy and the higher ups revealed the nature of the disease that was killing her, and had been since birth, that she would come to be seen as an example to all, and a revelry in her honor would be held.
"I swear I'll kill every last one of those hooligans, with their guns and their black cloaks, damn, I will kill each and everyone of those terrorists." Vowed the commanding officer, speaking from altered memories.
"All right. For scouting, you can leave the reaper frame and go ahead, they cant see you in this form. However, spirits look normal to other spirits." Charles explained, getting out of the suit.
