Shulk seems to be a character based on precision and fighting/countering according to the enemy with Monado Arts, so he seems a bit stiff and laggy on his attacks. Little Mac on the other hand is a character that goes all out with insanely fast moves that have little to no lag (I think even his dash attack is safe), and moves a lot in his attacks. They're kind of opposites.
Well, only a matter of hours now 'till I can delve in myself and lose all my sleep this weekend.

Taking some time getting used to the new characters. Maybe I shouldn't have tried Shulk first? Because I just tried Little Mac and he was fun as hell. Shulk felt a little stiff. Robin is also pretty fun, Metaknight seems to be better all round. He can't glide on up b, though. I don't think he'll devour the metagame like last time though, because everyone else has caught up to him. Unlocked Ness pretty quickly. The silly kid commited suicide via lightning. Also, Live and Learn is in this game and it makes smash run amazing. Need to get round to Palutena and Rosalina. I could've told you that; Shulk's attacks are horribly slow and laggy.

I didn't appreciate how stiffly he controlled really. Though that's not really my biggest problem with him. The Monado arts can be difficult to activate in the middle of a hectic battle. I love Shulk but he just doesn't seem like my type of character in terms of play style.
I still haven't played enough yet. Don't wander into the back alleys of Classic mode on a high intensity... it gets real rough round those parts, you've probably heard why.
EDIT: Oh, and Little Mac's side special is actually really safe for the most part, the big problem is you have to be careful if you're near the edge of the stage. You will suicide. Strangely, his neutral special wind up punch is actually more safe, because if you hit the edge you'll stop before flying off. The only real downside is the recovery lag if you charged it to max. His smashes are better launching options, honestly, and his recovery sucks, but he's still the character I'm liking the most right now.
EDIT 2: Agh practicing against level 9 Robin using Mac is a nightmare! I can tell Robin is going to be one of the most prominent zoners in the meta game. Then again, I probably should be using someone who requires so much close range.
I like Pit and Dark Pit in this game, more than brawl at least. Which one is better is down to preference, and I'm not sure I really know which one I like more. They both have better launching power with an actually useful side b and Pit's arrows are much more bendy. People are going to get creative with those I can tell.

I didn't appreciate how stiffly he controlled really. - Didn't appreciate?Though that's not really my biggest problem with him. The Monado arts can be difficult to activate in the middle of a hectic battle. - To be fair, it's your first day. You'll learn to get used to those things. It's like Olimar keeping track of which pikmin is used next.I love Shulk but he just doesn't seem like my type of character in terms of play style. - I could've told you that; you like fast characters who don't completely ruin their power for speed (MK and Little Mac, for example) and don't really like slow characters. Though, until now I thought you prized Air-game above all else, but clearly not since you're using Little Mac. He seems to be a favorite for quite a few people, along with Bowser. Of course, I'm not too concerned about that; I'm going to adapt to the characters I like instead of going by first impressions.I still haven't played enough yet. Don't wander into the back alleys of Classic mode on a high intensity... it gets real rough round those parts, you've probably heard why. - I have not. Haven't paid too much attention to the solo modes (which will probably be the first thing I do once I get the game) but I do know about Master Core and how you can guarantee from the roulette before battles that you get whatever you want.EDIT: Oh, and Little Mac's side special is actually really safe for the most part, the big problem is you have to be careful if you're near the edge of the stage. - Little Mac's Side special isn't bad, but if it gets predictable it's easily punished. Neutral Special, on the other hand, is considered...not very good. His smashes are decent, but even his tilts KO early, and are faster.EDIT 2: Agh practicing against level 9 Robin using Mac is a nightmare! I can tell Robin is going to be one of the most prominent zoners in the meta game. Then again, I probably should be using someone who requires so much close range. - Maybe. Frankly I think Samus is better than Robin at that this time around, but we'll see, I guess.I like Pit and Dark Pit in this game, more than brawl at least. Which one is better is down to preference, and I'm not sure I really know which one I like more. They both have better launching power with an actually useful side b and Pit's arrows are much more bendy. People are going to get creative with those I can tell. Al, no offense, but you're saying things we've already known since the Japanese version came out (or maybe that's just me since I'm a researching freak).

Sorry, I haven't paid attention to all the specifics, especially not Mac after other characters got announced. Just my impressions.
In other news online is pretty great! It runs really smooth and I had a really fun time. I decided to go for one on one for glory matches because that's how I like em. I spent the best part of an hour repeatedly fighting a Shulk. He didn't have a japanese username (at least not in Japanese characters) and he was about my skill level so I assume it was his first day too. I used Mac and I actually only lost 2 of 12 matches, both times because I accidentally used side b and fell off the edge. They were intense though. For the foreseeable future though Mac is definitely my main. He's amazing.
His neutral is his worst move (although only by virtue of his up be being his only vertical recovery) and his side b is best used sparingly, but it's otherwise one of his best KO moves in a pinch. And wow you have to be seriously careful when using him, especially when up against someone like Shulk, whose player showed me some neat tricks that might help me improve in future. He seemed to cycle through Monado arts incredibly quickly and chose his moments far better than I would/have been. It took him a while to get into a grove though- he didn't bother with them for the first two matches or so, but eventually he started getting dangerous. I underestimated the importance of Monado jump, because Shulk has awful horizontal recovery without boosted jumps, at least with the default moveset. It was a good Shulk, he just left himself open by using backslash too many times. It was when he started getting good with visions that I started getting worried. Interesting to have a matchup where both characters have counter moves. (although Shulk easily has the best one in the game) I've got replays that I'd love to share... somehow.
But yeah, Mac is a glass cannon in the truest sense of the word. I can't be quite as aggressive as I usually am with Metaknight- for example, I'd have to be extremely arrogant to dare follow anyone into the air when I launch them. On top of that, he's not nearly as safe as Metaknight. I can't fall into a pattern with Mac. A lot of it is a waiting game/dodging game waiting for an opening. The most satisfying part of mac however is his knockout punch- that thing makes his character an incredible amount of fun. Surprisingly easy to land, too. It may have just been the Shulk but I landed it on a pretty good Link afterwards, too. I'm quite proud of the progress I've made with the character today. I should get around to unlocking the other newcomers soon and give them a whirl.
Oh and the Wii Fit trainer? Pretty solid, but will probably be forgotten. I completely forgot about her until I spotted her in the character select in her own little corner. She can boost her attack, and heal herself slightly, she's also got something similar to aura sphere and an odd head but projectile.

He didn't have a japanese username (at least not in Japanese characters) and he was about my skill level so I assume it was his first day too. It was when he started getting good with visions that I started getting worried. Interesting to have a matchup where both characters have counter moves. (although Shulk easily has the best one in the game) I've got replays that I'd love to share... somehow. - Youtube it with your crappy camcorder! But yeah, Mac is a glass cannon in the truest sense of the word. - Yep.I can't be quite as aggressive as I usually am with Metaknight- for example, I'd have to be extremely arrogant to dare follow anyone into the air when I launch them. On top of that, he's not nearly as safe as Metaknight. I can't fall into a pattern with Mac. A lot of it is a waiting game/dodging game waiting for an opening. - Definetly, Mac is a very different character from anyone in smash ever. - The only unlockable newcomers, to my knowledge, that aren't clones are DHD and Bowser Jr. You're not missing much.Oh and the Wii Fit trainer? Pretty solid, but will probably be forgotten. - I actually really doubt that; WFT is a very solid character, and I've seen him/her used quite a bit.I completely forgot about her until I spotted her in the character select in her own little corner. She can boost her attack, and heal herself slightly, she's also got something similar to aura sphere and an odd head but projectile. - Yep.Unfortunately, I don't get Smash until around 3 PM tomorrow...and I might be leaving for the weekend. I may try to get in some online matches with you guys since I've been itching to play smash online for ages now.

Oh really? I haven't seen any wii fit trainer matches. I didn't even know her move set. I should find some matches, because I haven't been hearing any talk about her.

So does Smash Run hold up anymore under actual gameplay?

So does Smash Run hold up anymore under actual gameplay? It's a cool side mode, but no. Though it's exactly what it was advertised as; a city-trial esque multiplayer bash. I'd imagine it'll be very fun with friends (I'll get back to you on that next week) but since it's local only they have to be nearby.

Ok, I have the weekend pretty much free now. I'll turn on wi-fi in a few hours if anyone wants a match, until then I'll be completing challenges and unlocking characters.
Also, will I need a new friend code since you got a 2DS for this Steve?
EDIT: Wait, how did I unlock Jigglypuff doing regular battles before everyone else?

Still not getting any better with Shulk... but Duck Hunt Duo is pretty great. I'm not usually one to enjoy zoners, but he's one of the most enjoyably aggressive zoners I've ever had the pleasure of playing in a fighting game. Aside from maybe Nu and Lambda... but I suck with them. I'm going to be spending more time with him.

I did pretty damn well in the first fight considering I suicided twice.
Before you arrived Claxus was mainly just using me as a punching bag.
