Wasn't sure if this belonged here or in the Borg Discussion section, but whatever. Now, combining mecha has been a staple of Japanese media since Go Nagai gave us Getter Robo. But Machine Red and Machine Blue combining into Cyber Machine Seiryuu reminded me specifically of EnRyu and HyoRyu, and their combined form ChoRyuJin from the mecha anime classic, "The King of Braves GaoGaiGar." Take a look for yourself: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nb-Xjl3HknASeveral other of the Machine Borgs resemble GaoGaiGar characters, so maybe Capcom was inspired by it?

Gonna use direct links to Photobucket instead of posting images directly, just a heads up. interesting. but isn't combined borgs up and down? You're right about that, but it's really more the fact that both feature humanoid robots that combine into a red and blue super form. As for other things possibly inspired by the anime, there's actually quite a bit. First of all, in GaoGaiGar, nearly every robot can change into a vehicle. Of course, Gotcha could have just as easily have been inspired by Transformers, which predates GGG and is quite popular in Japan. As for individual borgs, you already saw EnRyu and HyoRyu. The series later introduces their "younger brothers," FuuRyu and RaiRyu. Compare with Proto Panther and Panther Robot, respectively. Next, take Victory Baron and Victory Duke. Baron is the spitting image of Volfogg here (couldn't find a decent picture of him, had to take a screenshot myself =P). Duke is a bit of a stretch, but he does resemble Goldymarg at least somewhat. Now this is almost certainly a coincidence, but still worth pointing out. During the main character's fusion sequence, he combines with three vehicles, including a Drill Tank. A less fancy Beam Tank, perhaps? Nah. Finally, and perhaps most surprising, is Kou himself, and his uncanny resemblance to the main character of GaoGaiGar. According to Wikipedia (not sure if this is true or not), Kou's family name is Shishido. The main character of GaoGaiGar is named Guy Shishio. Furthermore, "Kou," when spoken aloud, has the same pronunciation as the Japanese word for "child." A child...in other words, a "little guy." Last but not least, just look at him. In another ten years, as long as Kou never gets his haircut and has his body converted into a cyborg, he'd look pretty darn similar to Guy there. Whew! Sorry for the gigantic wall of text, but this is interesting stuff.

That's a nice observation, however the main difference with Seiryuu & ChoRyuJin is the way the Red and Blue connect ( Seiryuu top & bottom and ChoRyuJin left & right).

Wow, that is pretty similar, except Machine Red & Blue take about 33 seconds less to combine.

Can't blame you for stopping on GaoGaiGar...it takes a pretty long time for the series to really pick up. The first 20-ish episodes are VERY formulaic, with an enemy showing up and the heroes beating him, Power Rangers style.
Around episode 25 or so, though, it suddenly becomes amazing and only gets better. The entire series is a throwback to the old, goofy Voltron-style Super Robot anime of the 70's, so it's certainly not a series for everyone. But if you're a fan of the genre, there's very few Super Robot shows quite as incredible as GaoGaiGar.

It said exactly what you said above. It should be bold...

While I'm a huge fan of GaoGaiGar, I've gotta disagree here. The red-blue combination is present in many, many animes, not just GaoGaiGar...or mecha series in general, actually. tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RedOniBlueOni explains it pretty well. The red oni-blue oni thing has been going on for a while and Red, Blue, Mars, and Atlas seem to have that going for them. Red and Mars always have that smug look with their arms crossed while Blue and Atlas don't seem to show too much emotion and are meant to attack from afar rather than getting up in their opponent's face. Similarly, this might apply to Ruby and Sapphire Knight, but they don't have faces so it's a bit hard to tell. Anyway, I think that if Capcom really wanted to base them off of GGG's mecha, they'd have kept in the Symmetrical Docking. I mean, that's the whole gimmick! The top-bottom transformation is better suited to Transformers Energon and its Powerlinxing, but that came out the year after Gotcha Force was released, so I don't know. the pre-production sketches of Machine Red and Blue don't look like they were made with combining in mind either, so it's more likely that they were just based on the red oni-blue oni concept. As for the rest of the similarities, I think it's stretching a biiiiit much. Goldy doesn't have any weapons of his own in robot mode, so it would be hard to base anything off of him. And Volfogg is a ninja police car, not a plane. The only similarities there are that they both are purple. Drill tanks are also pretty common; after Getter 2 made its debut, super robots tended to use drills a lot more anyway. Strangely, Beam Tank wasn't actually intended to have a drill at first. I think they just added it to compensate for how large the beam guns are. Now, Kou's similarities to Guy are probably because they both have lion-influenced designs, hence the last names. Shishio = Lion, I believe. This is just because lions are considered to be a symbol of courage and those two are meant to be courage-based characters. Kou is probably like a mini Guy in that sense, but we don't really know much about him other than the fact that he has no social skills and can make a whole lot of GF energy. Which is basically just courage energy anyway. Also, his eyebrows are outrageous. That usually has something to do with courage too. Seriously, what is UP with those things? They're each like three eyebrows combined into one. ...Aaaaanyway, that's why I think that the transforming borgs are based more on the Transformers franchise in general rather than GaoGaiGar...which was also based off of the Transformers series to an extent. It's hard not to base things off of that franchise, since it has 1000+ characters and nobody would notice if you copied a design unless it was a large red and blue truck with a trailer that goes off-screen until the plot demands it.

True, true, but really the point I was trying to make was less "ZOMG GGG = GOTCHA" and more "oh look a string of funny coincidences, isn't that interesting," you know? I mean, yeah every one of my conclusions is a pretty massive stretch (though the Kou/Guy both being based on lions thing is still a little spooky).
"Inspired" was a poor choice of words, that implies that Capcom decided to make them because of GGG. I meant to say something along the lines of "thought some of the GGG designs were pretty cool and borrowed small number of elements from them," but like you said, it could have just as easily been Transformers, or countless other mecha series, for that matter.
Furthermore, bonus points for being a Troper. I think it's a safe bet that Red Oni Blue Oni applies to Ruby and Sapphire...I mean, Ruby's attacks are based around explosives and wide-area damage, while Sapphy's all about precision and specific targets. It's not explicitly canon, but I don't think it's much of a stretch to picture Ruby as the more violent, uncontrolled type and Sapphy is more focused.

Alright, that works! Yeah, Gotcha Force has plenty of similarities with other series. That's part of what makes it so awesome! For example, Metal Hero comes from the...well, metal hero sentai series.
As for Ruby and Sapphire Knight, someone really ought to do a comic about that kind of thing. I'd imagine that they would TRY to fit the Red Oni Blue Oni trope, but Dark Knight would smack them around for bothering to have personalities. When he dies, Galactic Emporer would laser them in the face for doing anything other than obeying him. Hilarity would ensue!

Don't a lot of games have stuff in common with other games or Anime?
