Basically it is a giant crossover game. All kinds of robots from all kinds of anime are in it. King Ganer Gundams of all shapes and sizes Gurren Lagann Big O Eva Gao Gai Gar Eureka Seven Full Metal Panic Gekiganger 3 (well... not really) etc.
It is a series of turn based strategy game with RPG elements.

I won't lie, I LOVE Seed Destiny in Super Robot Wars L. It's pretty much given Seed Destiny the story it should have had in the first place, and makes Shinn the protagonist that he was suppose to be. Lemme tell ya, watching Shinn punch Kira for thinking killing Stella was the only way to save her was just great. Stella lives in this game no matter what, and you get to see Shinn smile and become a Super Pilot.

Except I think you can choose whether or not to save Stella. Heck one of the writer's of the show himself said that he prefers SEED Destiny's plot in the Super Robot Wars games more than the actual plot. They often do this kind of stuff to various anime. Neon Genesis Evangelion, is another good example, especially End of Evangelion, where you can do things such as have Shini save Asuka. Just another reason this series is awesome. I also want to get L but unfortunately it's not translated so I might wait a while to import it.

So I'm trying to get into this series. Where would you recommend that I start, and any tips? Also Claxus, do you play this?

I'd say just check out all of the translated games, and see which one you know the most mecha series in, or just play them in order. They're all unrelated so they're easy to jump into as you like, but you might not like going from a newer one to an older one due to how much the animation qualities improve.
I started with J on GBA, and one of the three original mechs from it is my avatar here. It's very Nadesico-centric, with some Gundam SEED, and the other series kinda tagged along for the ride. Also one of the very few games to include Full Metal Panic.

I think the rebirth of my Fire Emblem phase and love of mecha has led me to this thread. Hopefully I'll recognize a good number of mechs out of the ones that are translated in English ^_^
