I couldn't tell you why the numbers are bold I despise Serebii so much I won't click that link but IVs are like base stats Like when playing Dungeon and Dragons You roll up your stats to keep it randomized I also Competitively played pokemon on a battle simulator pokemon-online.eu/Well IV is like the Rolled stats for your pokemon e.g: Clefable with 10 IVs in hp has less hp than A clefable with 29 ivs 0 being the worst 31 being the best IT basically affects the Stat it corresponds to SO lemme use tyrogue for example. It has a base stat yield of 35 in everything. Tyrogue lv 50 Hp IV:21 = 105 hp Stat Att IV:10 = 45 attack stat Def IV: 5 = 42 defense stat Sp.Attk Iv:24 = 52 SP.Att stat Sp Def IV: 18 = 49 sp. def stat speed IV: 29 = 54 speed stat Hidden Power Type: ground Power: 51 I couldn't tell you the math behind it all, BUT let's compare to another tyrogue with a better IV yield. We'll call it a shiny tyrogue since in the GAMEs shiny pokemon are guaranteed better IV yields Shiny Tyrogue lv 50 Hp IV:27 = 108 hp Stat Att IV:23 = 51 attack stat Def IV: 29 = 54 defense stat Sp.Attk Iv:20 = 50 SP.Att stat Sp Def IV: 26 = 53 sp. def stat speed IV: 31 = 55 speed stat Hidden Power Type : ground Power: 57 That also explains why people like Shiny pokemon better, as that is how the GAMEs work, but in truth you can actually Breed pokemon with Higher IV stats, and complex stuff like that. But IVS ALSO affect your hidden power In our case we didn't change types but we did change power I'm sorry if this didn't explain it the best... but it's complex thing kind of... and I don't know the math to calculate the pokemon stats with those IV numbers but that's just to show examples of what IVs do and stuff. It's basically an ALMOST randomly generated stat for the stats that you see. I say almost because there is a way to control it in a limited fashion e.g: I got an Ambipom with 31 attack IVs - there's a way to check it in the game it's a pain in the butt to use math to figure it out...- and 29 speed ivs with a LONG LONG LONG chain breed from a shiny Gyarados to the ambipom I had to do 18 breed chains then I had to breed the nature I wanted along with a bunch of Egg moves... BUT I can answer MOST any question Pokemon mechanic wise and less game wise.. as I only battle with the Simulator I linked -kind of- above I may edit it in ... so yeah Also shoot me a message and I'll be willing to battle anyone on the Pokemon Online simulator -if it hasn't been mentioned here before- Edit: I fixed the hyperlink

That's why I even bother with the IV calculator. What confused me is why there are a bunch of numbers below the calculated IVs and why some of them are bold. I thought that was only true in GSC...?

Not even in GSC. In GSC all but the attack IVs of the pokemon had to be TEN, the max then being 15. So shinies then had decent IVs, but not the best.

I'll hit the IV calculator and See if I can figure all the bolds and stuff out - that may be in 3 hours so Bear with me I dislike serebii because of the site design... it makes me feel clunky and chunky-

You know what's fun? Sequence breaking. I've been replaying FireRed, and I'm at the fight with Koga with two badges. And I like it! ;D

Anne, just beat the Cerulean Gym and go east. Pretty straightforward after that. ...Wait, RSE sequence breaking? That'll be fun to figure out when I get to replaying one of those.
