Since this is a Sony section, I'd just thought I'd start a thread on one of my favorite PS1 racing games, Speed Freaks (Speed Punks in USA, and I have the USA version)!

Why is it your favorite? What does it have over other racing games? Why don't you love F-Zero more? Please elaborate.

my favorite racing games
1. Speed Punks 2. F-Zero (SNES) 3. WipeOut Fusion (PS2) 4. Powerdrome (PS2) (my latest favorite) 5. Gran Turismo 2 (PS1) 6. Crash Team Racing (PS1) 7. Crash Nitro Kart (PS2) 8. Crash Tag Team Racing (PS2) 9. Ridge Racer (the first one of course) 10. Ridge Racer V (PS2) 11. Hard Drivin' (on Midway Arcade Treasures 2 for Gamecube) 12. Pole Position 2 (on Namco Museum Vol. 3 for PS1) 13. Hydro Thunder (arcade and Dreamcast versions) 14. San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition (on Midway Arcade Treasures 3 for PS2) 15. SEGA Super GT (arcade) 16. Indy 500 (arcade version) 17. F-Zero AX
as for Speed Punks, the game has unique Rayman-like character design, pretty good physics, awesome level designs, and the graphics, it really brought out the capabilities of the PS1's Geometry Engine chip! Plus, it also has a crazy set of power-ups! This game is kinda like Mario Kart, I tell you! If you don't believe me, take a look at this youtube vid below

I never played it, but it looked fun. What do you think of Speed Punks? and please respond with an answer of your opinion, not asking me a question of what I think of some other racing game. Wait a minute, this game reminds you of Trackmania, doesn't it?! But then again, I shouldn't have asked that question in an accusing manner!

wanna know who made the game? well...it was created by Funcom, the European video game company that created the MMORPG Anarchy Online. It took two years for Funcom to make the game. Back in the early days of its development, it was known as Project SDR, and a bit later, Wheelnuts. there was this team of professional drivers involved in the game's development, known as the SD Team, whose logo resembles a Power Star from Super Mario. Of course, the SD Team's logo can be seen in certain tracks. First released in Europe on September of 1999, and then released in America on April 18th a year later.

Controls for the game
X button: acceleration O button: N/A Square button: brake L1/R1: powerskid R2 button: boost L2 button: use power-up
Items
Speed Boost Tokens: The hexagon things with the lightning bolt in them are Speed Boost Tokens, and you can pick them up on the track and use them for speed boosts. You can gather up to 10 of them to completely fill up the speed boost guage.
Max Speed Boost: This yellow-colored variation of the Speed Boost Tokens are rare and there is one on every track, and getting it will completely fill up your speed boost gauge. Occasionally they also appear in power-up boxes.
Basic Missile: They usually fire in a straight line, and stun the target driver upon impact. They can also be fired backwards by doing this button combo: L1+Down
Triple Basic Missiles: Fires a three-way missile attack. Like your regular Basic Missile, it can be fired backwards. Can be useful for stunning more than one opposing driver.
Homing Missile: These missiles can home in on the diver nearest the user. They CAN'T be fired backwards, though. If there's a Homing Missile fired by someone else on the track and it's coming after you, you can either do the following: 1. put a Bomb in the missile's path at the right moment 2. rear-fire a Basic Missile or Triple Basic Missile 3. use an Invisibility power-up 4. if you've done some pretty mean cornering on the track, you could do a powerskid in a way that would make the missile go right past you, but be sure to time it correctl!
Bomb: When you drop one of these explosives, they'll be stationary until someone (or you) drives into the red circle danger area surrounding the bomb. If you hold down L2 when deploying a Bomb, you'll make a remote-detonated explosive, and you can make the Bomb explode by pushing L2 again.
Slime: Drop on of them blobs of slippery goo behind your kart, and you'll give your opponents the slip and slow them down.
Machine Gun: The Machine Gun has eight rounds, and it takes four to stun an opponent. It can be fired backwards. Now, don't just randomly fire it, you'll have to lock on first!
Tire Pop: One of the rarer power-ups and one of the most useful. When activated, it inflates the tires of your opponents' karts and then POP! they get sent flying upwards and then back on the ground and they get new tires. If used by an opposing racer, act fast by rapidly pressing the X button! Or if you have an Invisibility power-up, you're safe from it.
Shockwave: Now this power-up is totally epic, as it fires a giant rainbow-colored arc of electricity which travels on the path of the racetrack, shocking any racer that comes its way, and also emptying their speed boost guages and removing power ups. If an opponent fires one, look out! You can do one of the following: 1. use an Invisibility power-up 2. get to the side of the track!
Invisibility: This power-up is highly useful, as it turns you invisible for a period of time, and also makes you invicible, protecting you from the following: 1. Missiles of any kind 2. Shockwaves 3. Bombs 4. Tire Pop The power also allows you to make opponents spin out and stealing their Speed Boost Tokens!
Winged Bomb: This power-up is available only in multiplayer races. When deployed, it will fly into the path of the race leader.
