what the heck did I just watch. Yuri Bear Storm.
Err, that's all that, or there's this Gif which can accurately portray my mental state.
The first episode just aired, and it seems to be the series most draped in Ikuhara's aesthetic, including his weird fascinations and re-occurring story elements, (most notably love and lesbian love) and the overall style of his show. He really seems to be taking magical girl transformations to a whole new level, once upon a time, it just used to be a simple abstract sequence where clothes slowly appeared on the character in question. Nothing too hard to understand, not much variation, only Cutey Honey really going for sex appeal to my knowledge. Even in Madoka, whenever Magical Girls transform, the transformation sequences themselves are still just transformation sequences, with some dancing thrown into the mix.
In Utena, Utena walks to the top of a really long tower and then pulls a sword out of her friend's chest, like she was the original Guilty Crown Genome wielder or something. Pretty sequence to be sure, but not as interesting to describe.
Then Penguindrum came along. An extremely upbeat J-Pop song plays (that's actually relevant to the story) and a metal shuttle appears, flies through tons of crazy colours until emerging in a white environment with stuff flying everywhere, then the shuttle is a bear, then it opens up, and the girl is inside in her Penguin-suit. She slowly steps down some metallic lily-pad things as she makes her way to the two laser-chain bound brothers as her clothes fly off her, verbally abusing them. Story relevant stuff happens, then the sequence just ends and Himari is back to normal.
In Yuri Bear Storm, the two bears are taken to a metaphysical court called 'the court of extinction' with a black background and slowly falling muti-coloured bows, three characters introduce themselves (the judge, the defendant, the prosecutor) who introduce themselves as 'Judge Sexy, Judge Cool, and Judge Beauty' the bears stand on trial and complain about how hungry they are, and the two attorneys discuss weather it's right to let the bears into the human world so that they can eat humans. They eventually decide that despite it being a sin, the bears are really hungry you guys, and might starve. The Judge claims that it their job to bring balance to the world, which is very sexy. So they get 'Yuri Approved' and the bears transform into cute girls in bear costumes (all while screaming Yuri approved, like it's their catchphrase), who prepare to eat the main character who is unconscious and suddenly naked, except their version of 'eating' is to lick a blooming white flower covered in honey, that grew out of her chest, in a way that looks like oral sex. Then she wakes up as though she was dreaming.
Wait, I thought I was describing a magical girl transformation sequence? That was pretty long... and did I ever start describing a magical girl transformation sequence? I mean the bears transformed. Much like Penguindrum, there's a story within the sequence itself! I guess by the final episode, all the real locations will be dropped for story-telling largely taking place in the metaphysical locations, just like Penguindrum. Imagine that, if Sailor Soon had all sorts of adventures and conversations while or as part of her transformation! Wait, Ikuhara directed some of the original Sailor Moon anime. It's like his sequences are becoming more and more elaborate. And why are cannibalistic bears becoming metaphors for lesbian sexual predators? I mean lord this show makes honey look really, really erotic, how do you do that? More importantly, how do I even begin talking about this in a blog post? I mean, that's just one part of the episode.
