Despite each of them being pretty light and lacking heavy characterization...I actually really loved the characters ;D They all have very distinct personalities and are all very likeable. They're not too cliched, I mean...they are...lol but they're cliched in a good way I think.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. Even in the characters I dislike I can find things I like about them. I mean, I HATE Tsutomu, but he's a pretty cool dude. Nah, he's not, but I can still appreciate his presence. (I like how he says "All part of my plan!" when he loses a borg lol).
(I especially love their voices. Not really the execution, but the voices match the characters VERY well. It irks me when a voice actor doesn't have the right voice for the character)

I'm actually okay with the voices, too. Except Sho's. His voice gives him all the masculinity of a two-year-old. (Can't WE get a voice actor from the Tales series, too, Japan?  At least that was my understanding of the long ago research I did ... ) The characters were a big draw for me, too. They're fun to write stories about in your head since there's so little actually said about them in the game  |

Ahaha. I loved Tetsuya's voice. I have no idea why.
And his personality for that matter.
That aside, the other characters were pretty good. Although, I still can't figure out what Yuji is saying half the time in the beginning of battles.

That's quality right there. [biased] I guess I wasn't quite clear on that xD Ahaha. I loved Tetsuya's voice. I have no idea why. And his personality for that matter. And his Samurai Shogun for that matter ... So you can tell what Yuji says after the battle?  |

Kou and Kakeru seem extremely generic to me. Because they are the first two that show up in the game, they're the first two I think of. As a result, when I don't really think about it they all seem extremely generic. Then I think about it, and yes, they are quite distinct. So you can tell what Yuji says after the battle? This is impossible from the point of cultural anthropology! |

What's strange though, is that sometimes Sho sounds like Marth from FE xD. There's a part where he says Marth's "Setsemeruga!" or something like that lol, and it sounds exactly like Marth from Melee. Strange, because Marth isn't very masculine lol... Kou and Kakeru seem extremely generic to me. Yeah, I'll have to agree with you on that. I thought I had that in my OP, but I think Kakeru changed my mind. I still don't know about Kou though, he just comes off as cookie cutter (other than the triple threat eyebrows lol). |

I like the light amounts of characterization we get.
And since their borgs reflect them, I feel we get a pretty good grasp of who they are.
We piece together who they are by them simply being them.
Imagine if these characters had lengthy amounts of establishment.
With each play through you would dislike that section more and more because of how much it detracts from the game.
If they wanted to flesh out the characters they could have had little character bios for each character that you can unlock by having them be your most used ally that play through, which would always be cool too.

I like every character. I don't even have anything against the voices despite them being in English, except (you saw this coming?) Usagi's. She sounds way too old in her voice so it doesn't fit her.
In terms of designs and personalities (yes, I see them all having personalities) they're all a great cast of characters.
