I'm going to go on a long angry rant over something that irks me about this shows second arc.
No, its not Rossiu, I forgave him.
Nonono, the ONE thing Gurren Lgann did wrong in my eyes, maybe just because I feel affection for her, was Nia in the second arc.
I feel like they screwed her up completely.
Ok, in the first arc she is introduced as a carefree, ditzy, curious, ignorant, and kindly adorable ragamuffin there to help Simon back on his feet.
She was however far from stupid, had well defined morals, and strong determination, and never complained or got angry even in the face of death- she was an endearing character.
Even when she gets kidnapped towards the end of the first arc she asks questions, insults the beastman in her own way, and even hits him despite the fact he holds her life in his hands- and she knows Simon will save her and she is incredibly brave.
And only the ONCE, maybe twice in the first arc does she get kidnapped, and never for very long.
Furthermore she wants to help, and she steps in during the final battle and other situations and tells the humans to stop ramming the teppelin, shes USEFUL! Even if her cooking, cook being her job, is bad supposedly. (That may just be dumb Rossiu)
She is also in Lagann, not fighting, but on the front lines against her father, and gains development in rejecting him- she says after Simon kills her father that she is sad, but doesn't blame Simon and will move on.
Thats strong.
In summary, she was the amazing person I fell in love with during the first arc.
Now, the second arc.
You get one episode of Nia awesomeness before BOOM!
The anti-spirals descend and Nia becomes their messenger because for some unexplained reason she is their born messenger(?).
Furthermore, as an anti spiral, she becomes, and I quote: 'A boring old bich'. As an anti spiral, she brings despair to humanity and Simon and follows the anti spirals, and has a heart of stone.
For most of the second arc.
SERIOUSLY!? NO MORE AWESOME NIA? THEY REPLACE HER CHARACTER WITH THAT!
Well, if she was possessed, that would be fine, I'd more sorry for her, but guess what I read up on the wiki?
All that changed when her anti spiral blood awakened was her memories and duties- her sudden change was in fact mostly self induced.
ARE YOU SERIOUS! YOU GAIN A FEW MEMORIES AND THEN THAT CHANGES SOMEONE, IN AN INSANT, FROM THIS:
TO THIS:
Ok, over time, maybe even Nia could change because she decided that she should fufil her duty. She has a strong sense of duty.
But leaving behind her lover for over 7 years, and humanity who she helped save, and all her pre-established love for life and morals at the drop of a hat isn't bad- its awful story telling and character development, especially since they were getting rid of one of the best characters in the series.
Well, I was wrong, halfway through arc 2 she returns to herself when she realises that she DID love Simon, still wearing her wedding ring in anti- nia form.
Yay! Now shes going to return to her old self and join them in the final battle- WAIT WHAT! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? THE ANTI-SPIRALS CALL HER BACK TO 'PROBE' HER BODY FOR INFORMATION AND SHES GONE IN A FLASH? GET REAL! THESE ANTI SPIRALS DO NOT NEED TO DO THAT WHEN THEY'RE THE MOST TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED SPECIES IN THE UNIVERSE! They could probably just put a data chip in her head so they experience and learn as it happens.
So, she becomes the damsel in distress. However I suppose its an anti-spiral tactic to induce as much despair as possible- but still
WHO CARES! SAVING HUMANITY IS A GOOD ENOUGH PLOT POINT, YOU DONT NEED TO RUIN NIA FURTHER BY MAKING HER AN FING DAMSEL IN DISTRESS FOR THE REST OF THE SERIES!
She becomes Simon's driving force- but as I said, Simon has enough of a driving force without having to save Nia.
Then, of course, the probing.
They weren't even trying to hide it- while I love the line "OMG ITS A GIANT NAKED LADY IN SPACE!!!!" It just became ridiculous fanservice, I dont know bordering on tentacle rape? Honestly, Yoko, the beach scenes, episode 6, and anti- Nia's black skin tight suit is enough fanservice guys!
Again, anti-spiral tactic- NO F YOU DIRECTORS! IF YOU HAD TO HAVE PROBING, YOU COULD HAVE STRAPPED A HEADSET ON HER HEAD OR SOMETHING NON-EXPLICIT!
Furthermore, as a damsel in distress, its like she lost her bravado.
In arc one, she asks innocent questions, insults in her own way, and even punches to the ground her kidnapper who has no good reason to keep her alive- in arc two, she may be up against THE anti spiral, but all she does is do big talk over how Simon and the others will arrive. Not so much as a struggle as she is 'probed' (Just so you know the probing is not quite as bad as I make it out to be).
I mean, wheres the Nia ignorance (Dont tell me she lost it in the 7 year time skip- she had it in the first episode of the second arc) shining through and the awesome resistance?
Then, shes rescued hooray finally some Nia!
Now, Nia may be back, but for the rest of the final battle she is essentially naked wearing only Simon's cloak- why does this annoy me?
First, unnecessary fanservice during a time of epicness, not jokey fanservice, and it to me at least symbolises that the director thinks she is vulnerable, weak, and without dignity and requires Simon's protection- especially when you consider they make her a trophy damsel rather than a helpful character.
Seriously, they make it so that she LIVES for Simon, and the love may be cute and I support the couple, and I know Simon isn't controlling or looking for a trophy wife, I like Simon- its genuine love- however its the developers views that irks me and the general damsel in distress cliche that Nia actually pulls off well and MOCKS in the first arc.
Also, they remove the attractive and innocent trait of her being innocent, Gainaix(?) heavily implied in an interview that Simon and Nia ' did what was necessary' during the 7 year arc. Not so pure anymore, crap.
In the final battle, she may be using spiral power in tengenn toppa gurren lagann, but all she actually DOES is say a few motivational things then, like the rest of the cast, leave the actual fighting to Simon even though they're all capable of helping out.
Yay! Nia and Simon are getting married, they can live happily ever aft- WHAT! WHAT! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!
SHE DISAPPEARS WITHOUT A TRACE AT THE ALTER! DIES!
Why?
AS AN ANTI SPIRAL, IF THE LEADER DIES, THEY ALL DIE.
WHY. TELL ME. THEY'RE SEPARATE BEINGS. THEY COULD HAVE GOT RID OF ALL THE ANTI SPIRALS BY DESTROYING THEIR HOME PANET, ENDING THEM.
Its a moving ending, and by god I respect how Simon is simply able to say something along the lines of-
"I loved her. But trying to bring back the dead will just get in the way of the next generation's growth right?"
Your strong man, really strong, giving up Nia like that. No sarcasm, I respect him.
In the end, I still love Nia, but I just find that its a fault with the directors, and really, some of the less than satisfactory things are simply anti-spiral tactics trying to add as much despair to hinder Simon's spiral power- but really, I think the anti spirals did loads of things to induce despair, they were masters- but lets face it against Simon, they shouldn't have bothered, they were f'd the moment they made enemies with him- its simply lack of a great character, out of character attitude, underdevelopment, forcing her to fall into an annoying cliche, and unnecessary fanservice that made how they did Nia in the second arc one of the very few things that actually went slightly wrong with the show, among a sea of rights.
R.I.P, Nia.
