Shirley awoke... to find out that she was awake.
She was cramped inside a weird casket, trapping her. She felt weightless and her body was blue, and swirled like mist. She was wearing spiritual apparitions of her clothes, which she was most relieved for.
"Help! Get me out of here dammit!" She yelled, her voice sounding odd, like her own put out through a synthesiser. No one answered her call.
Eventually, she was released.
She opened her eyes, and was blinded by the light.
She was in the middle of a large city in clouds, bathed in a pure white sky, and tall buildings with other spirits like herself floating about.
"Is this... heaven?" She mumbled to herself, getting up.
"No. This is Bliss. Welcome, Shirley Caroline Barnes." Said the same metallic voice from before.
"huh? Bliss?" She said, turning around.
She saw what she had been imprisoned in. It was a small bird cage structure, except completely enclosed with no bars. It was far smaller then her body, and portable.
"How did I fit in there?" She asked, wide eyed.
"We willed it. As spirits, our minds are no longer bound by our physical body. We are capable of achieving incredible feats, impossible feats, that to the living are incomprehensible. Only in the realm of death, however." Replied the spirit.
He took off his helmet. He was a handsom blond man with dazzling blue eyes, and as a spirit he had a hint of blue coloration, just like Shirley did now.
"Charles. Clover. Pleased to meet you, Shirley." He said, extending his hand.
Shirley cautiously reached out and shook his hand very slowly.
"How did you know about my name? And why did you kill me?" She asked, her surprised and shy voice suddenly laced with slight anger.
"I only knew you when I first laid eyes on you. Our eyes and armour allow us to know virtually anything about a person, most importantly, how happy you are. We only kill those who have attained Bliss, or are in an illusion of Bliss, as only the happy are allowed into our society of the dead. We killed you to save you from death, or rather, the death avatar, if you had died via natural means... you would be in a state of nonexistence upon your death. The unworthy live and die, sent to death. That is our job. We are the reapers of Bliss." Said Charles.
Shirley collapsed to the floor.
"This is too much to take in..." She cried, shaking violently.
"I understand. Take a look around with me. Bliss has everything to keep you happy for eternity. Arcades, your own home, loads of people, even your ancestors maybe... and of course, some of those darker needs of yours can be satisfied..." He winked suggestively, which creeped Shirley out to no end.
"Haha! Well, I wasn't joking but you know... what I'm saying is we have everything. Once you have finished head for the tallest building in Bliss. There is one place I want to show you before I let you roam free for a while." Said Charles. Shirley, still scared from his previous comment, didn't follow.
"Its nowhere like that. Its one of the most important places in Bliss. Come on." Charles laughed and Shirley eventually caved in and followed.
They reached two giant gates, beyond which was an abyss of nothing.
"This is death. The gates of death, to be more precise. Beyond this is death's body, dimension. It is his form. It is nothing, it is death. step through those gates and your afterlife ends, everything that is Shirley will cease to be. That is where the unworthy end up, without a chance of even seeing Bliss or enjoying their spirit form. You can head through any time, just so you know, just dont dawdle or he may eat bliss forever. We killed you before your time so that you could live in bliss. Any questions?" Asked Charles.
Shirley was mesmerised by death.
"Avatar?" She stuttered.
"You may have seen him. The avatar used to be the only thing to enforce death before mortality catches up with an individual, at least until The Reapers of Bliss came about. He is still crucial to our operations. His touch is what evokes the spirit form, as he extracts the spirit from the mortal body. Normally, he carries individuals straight to the gates of death, but when we reap, we have a deal that he extracts the spirit then hands it over to us for us to carry to bliss, like we did with you. He can exist anywhere where death is occurring, and multipul versions can exist of him at once. No one escapes him, even us, in essence." Charles laughed.
"How did... Bliss come into existence?" Asked Shirley.
"A story for another time. I have been summoned." Said Charles, he disappeared in a puff of blue smoke.
Shirley drew back sharply, and began to creep around Bliss, very scared and overwhelmed.
(Sorry Steve, but I'll continue posting chapters until another joins. Plus in all honesty I'm having more fun writing it myself... but we'll see.)
