Fate/Zero was originally a light novel prequel based off of the Fate/Stay Night visual novel. It documents the happenings and circumstances surrounding the Fourth Holy Grail War, which occurred 10 years before the events of Fate/Stay Night. Starting this October, it is being adapted into an anime series directed by ufotable (a very, very high-quality production studio) and has currently aired its 5th episode at the time of this writing. Additionally, with music by Kajiura Yuki and writing by Kinoko Nasu and Urobuchi Gen, Fate/Zero is one of the most anticipated anime in Japan this Fall Season.
The premise of the series is as thus: 7 masters (usually but not always extremely skilled mages) are competing in an all-out war located in Fuyuki City in order to obtain the Holy Grail. They are each assisted by their own summoned familiar, called a servant, who is the embodiment of a legendary, historical figure. These servants are summoned into one of seven classes, and their strengths and weaknesses are embodied by who they were back in their respective myths/timelines. For example, it's not much of a spoiler (revealed in episode 2, so whatever), but we learn that one of the masters has successfully summed King Arthur as an extremely powerful Saber class.
This is not the happy, teenager-filled 5th war of Fate/Stay Night. From episode one it becomes very clear that each of the competitors in the war knows what he is doing. These masters are out for blood.
UTW, Hatsuyuki, and Commie are currently subbing the series, and it usually is released late Sunday to Monday afternoon. I would really love to follow the series with you guys as it comes out every week!
