Ok so I was trying to get an alternate color eagle robot and I was using my uber overpowered level 10 flame dragon and I was finishing the level in like 1 minute. But the entire time I saw that alternate color eagle robot I never go a part for it. So then I tried my level 4 killer girl on the level and after I finish it BOOM I get a price! This happens to me the next time as well. I don't knowu if I'm just lucky or what but anytime I use an un-overpowered Borg to get an alternate color I always get it. Is there some secret to getting them or is it just my dumb luck?

I don't think anyone really knows the specifics of getting a borg or crystal, but I think that using different borgs could change the chances of getting crystals. I'm no expert on this but I would imagine that using different borgs generates different codes in the game which may have some kind of effect. I have no empirical evidence to back up my claims however, so it might just be my own confirmation bias ;D

that's it, we need someone who can read japanese to go search around the jap websites to see if someone has taken a look at the coding and knows what's going on. I would think that there is at least one person who has figured it out by now.

I think it is a mix of both.
I've noticed that (for me at least) when you use certain borgs, there's a greater chance, where you're fighting seems to have some effect, and of course it seems to me that higher playthroughs, at least on my game, seem to have a greater chance of not only finding certain borgs, but obtaining them as well.
On the other hand, me and my friend tried out an experiment one time, where we both used the same borgs on the same stage (in the same save file, even), and alternated playing each level. Our scores were generally within a small amount of each other, but for some reason, he was picking up borgs and pieces like crazy, at least two to four a level, while I was maybe getting one or two every six or seven levels.

I'm pretty sure the guide sells for $300 on Ebay. Or at least someone was trying to sell it for that much at one point, I think. So looking at the guide is probably not going to be possible.

I believe this has already been said, but it might be the player Borg cost in relation to the CPU Borg that is defeated that could make a difference.
Since Flame Dragon costs 500 GF more than Eagle Robot, it could mean the chance of getting a crystal is either not possible or very low.
Maybe using Neo who only cost half as much as Eagle raises the chance of getting a data crystal.

Sigma Spam would then work for almost everything. Makes sense cpnsiderong how frustrating it was to get a death eye.

I was going to use the fact that I use dragons in my rare Borg hunting and often succeed as an argument against that theory, but it does explain why I often don't get rare Death Borgs... But score probably factors into it as well, judging by the fact that I didn't have much trouble getting rare Death Bombs despite the fact that I used Borgs 22-50 times higher in cost.

It really does seem like there should be a pattern with programming codes and borgs, but what they're based on is the question everyone has. Later playthroughs give you more chances to find rare ones, but I don't think it makes them any easier to catch. Different battles with a couple hard-to-find borgs appear when you lose certain battles, so I remember replaying special stages from playthrough #1 to complete my 'get' list.
Oh, and if the guide your talking about is the Bradygames strategy guide for Gotcha Force, then Manocheese was 110% correct. Let me put it this way:
Do not buy the Official Bradygames Strategy Guide under any circumstances!
I've owned it before; the price tag from GameStop, when they had it, was literally 1 cent! There were several errors in it, and about half a page worth of 'advice' while the rest of it was just pictures of all the borgs. I couldn't even re-sell the thing, so I just trashed it.
If you're talking about the manual, however, I wouldn't know; I don't think I've ever seen it, or if I have it was a long time ago.

Meh, the manual ain't very useful either. I mostly used it because of the pictures. (And to show friends.)
