Shirou Emiya lost his parents in a fire when he was young and was later adopted by a sorceror by the name of Kiritsugu Emiya. Although he was full of admiration for his adopted father and yearns to become an ally of justice, Shirou has limited powers and was unable to become a strong sorcerer like his father. That is until one fateful day, he was drawn into the Holy Grail War and had to summon a female "Servant" known as Saber in order to protect himself. It turns out that the Holy Grail War involves a series of battles among powerful sorcerors to fight for the possession of a relic that will grant one's wishes, the Holy Grail. There are altogether seven "Masters" who can summon their respective "Servants" from different classes known as Saber, Archer, Rider, Berserker, Lancer, Caster and Assasin. These "Servants" have to hide their names in order not to reveal their weaknesses to the enemies. The story revolves around Shirou and his entanglement in the Holy Grail War.
I love it

The original visual novel for FSN had a more darker and serious tone to suit the nature of the war. I personally was disappointed when the anime came out, because it almost seems like half of it turned into slapstick comedy and since half the masters are kids, there wasn't a real "in it to win it by any means" master and servant pair. I think part of that may be because they adapted the original Fate arc (I suppose they can't be blamed though) rather than the Unlimited Blade Works arc (everyone's favorite, which focuses on Emiya Shirou and Archer) or Heaven's Feel (the "true end" that is used in all official later continuities), which are less linear and far more interesting.
If you want to watch something something that's more representative of the work that TYPE-MOON does, I suggest the currently-airing Fate/Zero, which documents the Fourth Holy Grail War (yes, the one of which you catch a glimpse of the ending in episode 1 of the FSN anime), and is definitely more serious and action-packed. I'm going to start a thread about that now, actually.
