I noticed that there is a "What are you..." thread for music and watching stuff, but not for reading. I am fixing that. This thread is one where in we talk about books. Let's talk about anything from Edgar Allen Poe, to Weis and Hickman. From Dan Simmons, to Lois Lowry. From Robert Frost, to Garth Nix, From Laurell K. Hamilton, to Jim Butcher From Hemmingway, to Kate Chopin. From A. A. Milne, to Arthur C. Clarke. Let's just talk about books.
Tell us what you are reading and what you think of it. What did you like about it? What don't you care for? Who knows, you might get a few more people interested in your book.
I just finished reading the Atomic Detective. It is a book about a robot that was built to help take over the world, just trying to make a reformed, honest living in the world of tomorrow. It is a pretty good book. One of the things that I really liked about it is the word choice. There is some wonderful word choice in this book. It would have been really easy to just type some stuff up, but you can tell that they spent a lot of time making sure that things are clear yet concise. The word choice also is used to deepen the main character, Mac. He is a robot, so whenever they talk about his thoughts, feelings, workings, etc. They have to get a bit technical, yet how smooth the story flows really prevents this from disengaging the reader. Also, it is used ironically to show that, like Data, Mac is becoming more human.
One of the things that I didn't really like was that the ending came a bit out of left field. Not in a bad way, not in a disappointing way, but it doesn't really jive with the flavor of the rest of the story.
I am currently reading A Street Car Named Desire (watching it too). However, since I am no more than a few dozen pages in, I will not be rambling on this one.

Too many words that I don't know. I think my brain's gonna explode.

What is unclear? I can define my terms. Or is it just that I threw so many foreign authors at you all at once?

... What do you use books for then? Or do you just throw them to the wayside?

... What do you use books for then? Or do you just throw them to the wayside? Misread that as throwing them at people for some reason On-topic: I'm reading The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan. As far as what I've read into, it's just as good as its prequel series with the craziness/seriousness/addictingness and all, but the one disappointment I have with it is that it doesn't have the crazy chapter titles from the original Percy Jackson series.

Percy Jackson? I've heard of his face. What are those about?

It's kind of like Greek mythology-goes-modern thing. With a lot of not-seriousness added. The books are quite good, if very slightly cliched and occasionally very slightly un-kid-friendly, but the humor and the modernness puts a nice fresh spin on things, and...its faults aren't that extreme anyway :3 But I heard the movie was extremely inaccurate (Now I ask myself why on earth I was surprised when I heard that )

So, I finished Street Car Named Desire. It is... weird. I much prefer Death of a Salesman. There are quite a few similar themes between them. Both have a disillusioned main character who lives in a world of lies and illusions. Both have someone in the supporting cast who is a hard ass s.o.b. who ends up contributing to the main character sinking deeper into their world of pretty falsities that ultimately ends up with the main character descending into madness (although there is a school of thought that Ben [Willy's brother in Death of a Salesman] might indeed be a part of this world of illusions and never existed in the first place). Both have people in the supporting cast who are sinking into the illusions with the main character, believing their lies, but in the end break free from the spiral, try and save the main character and are unable to. etc.
What do you guys think? I am assuming everyone has at least read Death of a Salesman since I am under the impression that almost everyone who went to high school has read it for high school.

I've recently read the hobbit... when I was a little kid, I loved the Hardy Boys books. I liked reading treasure island-it held my attention for quite a while. I read the EU star wars book where *spoilers @alert@ spoilers* Princess Leia gets married. *End The Spoiler Alert* I don't remember the author, but My Side of the Mountain, and On the Far Side of the Mountain were old favorites. 'Space for whatever else comes to mind'

Hello all. I would like to share something wonderful with you. The Deepgate Codex by Alan Campbell. This is one of the best high fantasy trilogies that I have ever read. However, I really can't say anything about this intricate story without giving things away. Especially since one of the big things about this series is its atmosphere and writing style. Both are spellbinding as Campbell weaves a brilliant narrative.
This recommendation is going to come off sounding pretty weak, but I hope you will give it a shot.

I just finished Looking For Alaska by John Green, currently reading Machine of Death, which is a collection of short stories. They're both great, I'd give 'em both a try.

I used to read avidly, but I've not been reading as much as of late. tell you what, though. I am reading lord of the flies at the moment. It's very tense, I can just see them setting up for a lot of mindless death! creepy stuff, in a phycological sort of way.

Well, looks like i'm not alone. I'm reading it, and Kane Chronicles, book 2. Who's your favorite character? Mine's Leo. I've always liked inventing, and building stuff, so I actually kinda feel a "connection" to him. Rick Riordan is AWESOME! Also, I hate that there's no crazy chapter names too. I used to laugh and laugh at those. ;D
