Who here plays card games? Whether it be a collectible trading card game or something you would play with a normal deck of cards. Whether it be Uno, Skip-Bo, or even Apples to Apples. I don't know about you, but I love em. I play Yugioh and dabble in Magic. Skip-Bo is a big family game. Everyone at my house (but my twin) is super good at it (or... at least we think we are). Every time the family gets together, it comes out. I would play the latter more seriously, but I have found it hard to get back into ever since my deck was stolen back in middle school... Anyway, this thread is here for random card game talk. With so many card games out there you may wonder why there is just one big thread for them all. Because I didn't want to make more than one, that's why.
Amidst my ramblings you may have lost sight of my initial question. Allow me to reiterate. Who here plays card games?

I like playing card games (..on motorcycles).
I have played several different card games in my life. The card games I still love playing today are usually Uno and Yu-Gi-Oh!. I have also tried playing Pokemon once but that didn't work out. I also was a fan of this one card game for a while called Duel Masters.... I have considered trying out new card games but really only the ones with a standard set of cards. I can't afford spending the money for a card game like Magic or Pokemon again.

Oh, card games. I'm basically addicted to Magic and Pokémon, while playing some Yu-Gi-Oh and other assorted games all the time. There's also this game called Dominion that's a lot of fun and I play with all sorts of people, even those that don't normally play games.
Apart from those, I also play stuff like Uno, Skip-Bo, and anything with a normal deck of cards.

Ah, card games, interesting things. For the most part, I find myself playing Uno with friends these days, but I have a pretty good Yu-Gi-Oh zombie mill deck. I also play World of Warcraft TCG to a limited degree.

I have to play Cribbage (did I spell that right?) every other Thursday with my therapist. But it's okay (especially when I win).

The game's rather good, and it's very easy to confuse for Magic. To some extent, you can use anything as mana, but you have to place it as a "mana" first. For example, if the need arises, you may use a piece of weaponry as mana, but you'll lose the ability to use it for the rest of the game, as once it is placed in the "resource" (Pretty much mana) zone, it's treated as a "resource".
So you have to be careful, "should I place this really awesome card as a resource and play cards this turn, but lose it for the rest of the game? Or should I wait and hope that I get a "quest" (AKA: The cards you're supposed to use as mana) later on?
In essence, yes, you can use anything as mana. But you should really try not to use anything that isn't meant to be mana as it can hurt you later on.

I had a chance to play the WoWCraft game today. Have you played with the Grand Melee Expansion?

To this moment, not really. I have only really experienced small skirmishes with my friends using my hastily constructed, cheap decks that I got out of my cousin, a starter deck, and some rare Naxxramas cards.
Currently, there isn't that much WoW TCG activity where I live, and not to mention I don't really have a solid deck, but the Grand Melee cards and expansion look interesting. Mostly, however, I look forward to using a Scourge deck, which I will eventually obtain. Most of my experience with the WoW TCG is with friends who barely know how to play, and with my cousin who I have not sparred with in a while.
However, if you really want to try something crazy and somewhat rule break-ish, try Raid Deck duels. I fought my friend with Naxxramas, against Molten Core, and I gotta say it's a hectic, and very fun experience, if not rather messy (cards were everywhere, not enough space...). Nothing like taking down an elemental Lieutenant with a giant corpse monstrosity.

I'm curious. People say they play Yu-Gi-Oh, but they never say their play-style, their strategy, favorite cards, or their monster types... =S
As for me, I use Zombies, Rocks, Cloudians, and Earth Bound Immortals. I like to starve people slowly, either forcing them to get rid of cards from their deck, or just grinding the game to a halt with defense. I guess you could call me slow and steady. I'm kind of like a dormant volcano.
My decks are usually very slow, if not sleepy, usually losing if I'm pressured too hard early on, but if I survive (Which I tend to do), I will pull off such massive effect combos that usually leave my opponent without cards to play. As such, I'm not the preferred opponent, because people tend to dislike the hopelessness my decks convey at the very end. Sometimes they even quit early on as I start taking the advantage.
I really dislike brute force and rushing in card games, as they tend to be powerful at first, but very weak later on. Mostly because I draw the game out into a very, very slow fight. Many of my cards convey weakness in the minds of newcomers or overconfident people, as they have low attacks and defense. I win by effects, not by force, which generally pisses off newbies as they cannot counter my chains of death.
Probably my two favorite types of cards, out of my favorites, are Earth Bound Immortals, and Cloudians. Earth Bound Immortals can be very hard to use, seeing as they require sacrifice, and special field requirements, but tend to just say "I win." when they come out. Nothing better than your opponent thinking they've driven you into a corner, when you suddenly summon a giant, all-powerful deity with the ability to ignore their defenses and plow straight into their life points.
In other card games however, ones that don't have limits on how much cards you can play per turn, such as WoW and Magic, I go for the huge-ass swarm armies. I don't play Magic, but I tried it once and it seems fun.

Well Viroth, I would recommend checking out the Grand Melee. It is basically an extra deck that everyone draws from at the beginning of their turn (in addition to drawing) that adds all kinds of awesome effects. Some stay on the field awhile, some are basically instants. Here are a few of my favorite effects:
Destroy all of your opponents rare and epic cards.
Each deck is also an ally with protector and 0 attack / X health where X is the number of cards in that deck. When a deck is dealt damage, put that many cards into its owner's graveyard, then remove that much damage from it. A deck can't leave its owner's party.
Starting with the player to your left, each player reveals cards from the top of his deck until he chooses to stop or his revealed cards have a combined cost greater than 21. A player wins if his revealed cards have or share the highest combined cost of 21 or less. Cards with no cost count as 10. Each winner puts the last card he revealed into hand. Shuffle all other revealed cards into their owner's decks.
Ask someone not playing in this game to choose which player they think is winning. All players not chosen may draw a card.
You may choose another deck you own. If you do, remove your old deck, graveyard, and hand from the game and swap your new hero into play with the same attachments, damage, and orientation as your old hero. Draw a card from your deck for each card in your old hand.
Each player puts the top card of his deck into his graveyard. Then, he puts X Murloc ally tokens into play with 1 attack / 1 health, where X is the discarded cards cost.
If a hero would be dealt damage, prevent X of it, where X is the number of layers that hero's controller is wearing.
The Arena heals 5 damage from each hero. Each player may take a 5 minute break. If he doesn't return within 5 minutes, he loses the game.
At the end of each player's turn, he readies all heroes and allies in his party if he can hear music.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As for Yugioh. I feel silly, I was hoping for more than just, "I play this game" and yet I didn't contribute myself.
I have what my friends call a cookie cutter beat down deck. It focuses on pulling out low level high attack monsters, buffing them up with equip cards, impairing my opponents trap cards, and hitting hard with Power Tool Dragon. It is the kind of deck that you say you are good against. However, because my deck is "cookie cutter" (i.e. a bunch of stuff that works thrown in together) people don't expect half of the stuff that is in my deck to be there. This is my main deck.
I also have a Rock deck. It focuses on what rock decks do: flipping returning something to the opponents hand, swinging, setting themselves back face down, life gain, rinse repeat. Although I just got 3 Burdens of the Mighty today so I finally have a reason to use my King Tiger Wangu. I can't wait to see how that runs, especially against my little brothers burn deck.
I also have a psychic deck. It is still a prototype... it doesn't do much but life gain and trap destruction at this point.
People quit against you early on if you start to build up speed? I would like to play you sometime.
Magic/WoW are pretty fun.

Sounds like a very interesting kind of "expansion", this grand melee thing. I'll check it out. In theory, my decks are very, very good against attack decks, but only in theory. Somewhat like the Advance Wars CO Jugger / Flak, I can really excel in annihilating my opponents with deceptively weak cards, but my decks can really "flop" if I don't get a starting boost. My friends usually referred to this as "the curse", which meant getting an excessive amount of one type of card, such as an all spell hand, which left me with nothing to fuel my combos.
High attack decks are my least favorites to play as, but I enjoy fighting them. I have to say it's very fun seeing my weak high level zombies getting smashed by a heroic warrior, only to come back in greater numbers (usually bringing some catastrophic effects to my enemies.). You also mentioned you wanted to play against me, which I believe may be possible. Try LackeyCCG. It's a program that lets you play ALOT of TCG / CCG types, from Magic to WoW, and Yugioh, among many others.
Still, I can't say I'm invulnerable to attack decks. I've met some people with very powerful beat downs that kill me before I can get my slow deck moving. This typically happens to me if I can't get some sort of a stall defense going. Anyways, look into that Lackey CCG, it might let us actually duel.

i play yu-gi oh
my play style really depends on what deck im using
and i have like 3 decks
fiend deck-which relys on subduing my opponents monsters with good counter cards and stoping and then using my strong offense to destroy my opponents
plant deck-- same as said above deck but a bit more complete with more counteres and better effects
dragon deck- my pride and joy as i destroy my oopponents with powerful cards and monsters
i once enetered a regionals tourney but lost every match with my poorly made E-hero deck still had fun though
i once entered a regionals

Due to the fact that I tend to use "forbidden" cards (as by their list), I don't like any tournaments of sorts. I feel as though they're too strict on some cards, and vastly forgiving to others. Sure, "Call of the Haunted" which can special summon ONE monster from the graveyard gets the ban hammer. But Lighting Vortex, which kills ALL of your opponent's face up monsters is allowed. Funny stuff, eh?
Edit: I don't mind them making cards like "Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End" forbidden, but a great deal of cards that aren't that powerful, such as Premature Burial, get struck down, while game changing cards that can be used by any kind of deck are generally limited.

I'm semi-addicted to Yu-Gi-Oh. I run a frog/stall deck, but with cards like Solidarity, Cryomancer of the Ice Barrier and Wetlands in there to allow me for a more attackive strategy if I choose. I attempted to add synchro monsters but... I dislike them greatly. I don't know why.
My alternative deck is a fusion based deck which serves pretty well, as long as you don't waste the fusion monsters.
And if anyones interested, my favourite card is a tie between The Creator and Emes the Infinity, although neither of those are in any of my decks because they really aren't too good. They're just awesome.
I used to dabble in the Pokemon TCG but I don't really like it too much any more. I'd probably get into it again if there was an online version or they made a Pokemon TCG 3 game, but until then no.
I attempted to get into Magic but that died out in England (certainly my area) pretty quickly so its rare to come across packs any more.
I also play Uno, and normal card games like Cheat, Shed, etc.

That is too bad since I am getting my decks tourney ready. Also, I think you should check the ban lists out again. yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/September_2010_ListsIt will update again in march. Also, if you actually meet someone who plays competitively, they can give you all kinds of really disgusting reasons that those cards are banned. Sometimes they are banned because they work too well with one deck. Like Rescue Cat in a Gladiator Beast deck. As for premature burial, that is banned because of the wording. If it pulls a monster back from the graveyard and then Premature Burial is returned to your hand, the monster that it brought back stays on the field... allowing you to play Premature Burial again... and get something else back... Also, what is this program that you mentioned? LackeyCCG?
|
|
|
Post by Viroth on Nov 18, 2010 21:01:38 GMT
Yes, LackeyCCG. If it's the wording, they can easily errata it. As I've said, there are some that deserve to be illegal, or forbidden, but some of them are limited and can be twice as good as the forbidden ones.
LackeyCCG is a manual (pretty much real-life style, not like a virtual game) card playing program that can download different plugins which allow you to make decks and play with other people online. There are many card games that you can play with said program.
