FFFFF wrote a long post and then accidentally closed Firefox.Well, I usually just make it up <.< But the trick is to remember where your imaginary light source is coming from (in wartortle's case, the upper left) and add tones where the shadows would then result: usually the opposite side (bottom right). There are some areas I like to almost always shade though, which are typically under an overlying object like under chins, clothing folds, noses, etc. Here's that previous example pic, except with tones. The yellow represents the light source, and the blue the resulting shadows.  (Adding some triangular-ish shadows in hair also makes it seem a little less rubbery) Usually adding multiple tones makes the picture pop a bit more as well, but I didn't do that here for animation purposes. ...But... You probably shouldn't be learning from me, since I haven't actually taken any art classes. >.< I think I'll create a "drawing tips" thread so we don't go too offtopic here and everyone can contribute.

By the way, I'm trying to draw a ToS/Gotcha crossover. Who would make a good Regal?  (Kou, Kakeru, Nekobe and Sho are taken) Hmm...That leaves us with Kotaro, Tama, Tsutomu, Kitsune, Met, Yuji, and Tetsuya. Tetsuya. Everyone else is either too laid back or too much of a prick. |
