Because of a coalition between the US and Japan comic/manga industries in order to import and export more IPs back and forth, scanlation sites like Mangafox and OneManga have been shutting down left and right.
I never was a huge manga fan, but some of my friends are, and they've ranted to me a long while about this. What do you think?

I think it's nice they were allowed to stay up, but if the companies are trying to get more IPs into English, then it's perfectly reasonable to want to prevent those IPs getting onto scanlation sites.

It's incredible naive of corporations to think they can stop sites, because as long as Internet will exist, "free" sites will always be around. There will always be new sites taking over the old ones.
I've even heard arguments saying that sites like these even promotes the merchandise, since people end up buying the real thing after all.
Not that I personally care anyway, since I'm no Manga reader.

Part of me understands why they would want to shut those sites down. If I was an artist I would be pretty angry if people were scanning my stuff and posting it in it's entirety on the internet. With sites like those, thousands of people will just wait for someone to buy and translate the manga and then read it online instead of paying for it. It hurts the manga business and the people that say it promotes manga sales are just making up excuses to not pay for manga. Shutting down onemanga and the like is not an unreasonable decision.
But then the other part of me is arguing for those sites because without them, I'll have to find other sites or, even worse, actually pay for manga.

Well I live in a town with no place to buy manga and the closest place that sells magna is about a thirty minute drive from where I live so I really rarely get magna, so I'm a little upset that those sites are closing down but I can understand why. Oh well, just have to find something else to pass the time. But like Admin said, I think there will always be people trying to scan magna off the internet, even small sites that are very hard to find are the only ones left.

sadsadsad. It's understandable, but the japanese manga industry needs to make manga more available to us people. [I'm ranting mainly about Pokemon manga(or the lack of it)] They don't have it at the library, don't have it at the bookstores. I do understand why the internet is the only means of getting certain manga.
